The Bonelight
"What we see as light is but a fracture in time, a glimpse of the battle that reshaped the world, flickering endlessly in the Osmaris Sea."The Bonelight is a chilling phenomenon that manifests over the Osmaris Sea, particularly under a full moon or during nights when the skies are cloudless. It is an ethereal, ghostly glow that seems to rise from the depths of the sea, casting a pale, spectral light across the water. Sailors describe it as both mesmerizing and unnerving, like faintly glowing mist that moves with an eerie purpose. The Bonelight doesn’t just illuminate the surface, it often flickers like flames beneath the waves, as though fires are burning in the watery depths. Legends abound as to what the Bonelight truly is. Some claim it is the restless spirits of those who perished in the wrecks scattered across the sea, their souls unable to find peace. These spirits are said to call out in whispers or faint cries that seem to echo across the water, luring ships off course and into hidden dangers. Others believe the Bonelight is the result of an ancient curse placed on the sea itself, the work of an angry god or powerful sorcerer whose wrath still lingers. A darker tale tells of an ancient battle fought on the Osmaris Sea between two forgotten civilizations. According to this myth, the Bonelight is the lingering glow of their collective magical might, unleashed in a cataclysmic battle that destroyed both sides. This magical residue is said to warp reality, ensnaring ships and dragging them into the depths, leaving only wreckage behind. For those brave, or foolish enough to sail the Osmaris Sea, the Bonelight is a bad omen. It is said to herald impending doom, and many captains insist on turning back the moment they see its pale glow on the horizon. Some desperate souls, however, believe the Bonelight holds untold treasures or forbidden knowledge and are willing to risk everything to seek its source.
Manifestation
The Bonelight manifests as a pale, ghostly glow that rises from the waters of the Osmaris Sea, most vividly under the moonlight. It shimmers faintly, creating the illusion of pale, white flames flickering beneath the waves, and drifts with an eerie, unpredictable rhythm. The glow often appears as patches of light that move across the sea’s surface, blending with the mist that rolls in at night. At times, it seems to pulse softly, as if alive, casting an otherworldly radiance that illuminates the bones, wrecks, and jagged rocks along the shore. The Bonelight is silent but carries a strange, unnerving presence, and those who watch it for too long often claim to hear faint whispers or feel a pull toward the water.
Localization
While the Bonelight can be found all over the Osmaris Sea, it is reliably found in several specific locations on moon filled nights, each seemingly tied to its ancient origins and the sea’s mysterious nature.
The Shimmering Depths: A deep, dark trench in the center of the Osmaris Sea, believed to be the heart of the ancient battle between the Gods and the Goliaths. The Bonelight here is the strongest, radiating from the depths in swirling patterns. Sailors say the light is hypnotic, drawing ships dangerously close to the trench’s edge. Legends claim the abyss contains the shattered remnants of divine weapons used in the battle, their power still lingering and causing the glow.
The Wrecked Shoals: A treacherous area of jagged rocks and coral reefs littered with the remains of countless shipwrecks. The Bonelight dances across the water here, casting an eerie glow on the skeletal remains of ships and the bones that wash ashore. Some believe the Bonelight is drawn to the souls of those who perished in the wrecks, with whispers suggesting it marks a graveyard of ancient sailors and warriors.
The Isles Of Mists: A cluster of rocky islands often cloaked in mist, said to be the remains of a once-great fortress destroyed during the battle. The Bonelight manifests here as columns of glowing mist that rise from the sea, creating the illusion of ghostly towers. It is said the light emanates from the ruins of a temple to one of the gods, still echoing with divine power.
The Bone Horizon: A stretch of open water where the sea appears unnaturally calm, but the Bonelight forms a shimmering band along the horizon. It is a place of dread among sailors, as those who steer toward it often vanish without a trace. Locals say this is where the Goliaths fell in battle, their spirits bound to the sea, and the Bonelight marks their eternal resting place.
The Spiral Grave: A slow swirling underwater vortex off the southern coast, surrounded by jagged salt spires. The Bonelight glows brightest at its center, creating a haunting spiral pattern on the water’s surface. Some believe this is a portal to another realm, left behind when the gods clashed with the Goliaths. Others claim it is the grave of a massive Goliath, its body still radiating divine energy.
The Hazy Reach: A foggy expanse where the Bonelight appears as drifting orbs floating just above the surface. These lights are said to move as if with purpose, often forming strange patterns or leading ships astray. Mystics believe the orbs are fragments of divine consciousness, while others insist they are the spirits of the dead, searching for peace.

Those who venture too close are often overcome by disorientation, vivid visions, or a chilling compulsion to follow the light into the sea’s depths. Whether a remnant of divine power or a spectral warning of the sea’s dangers, the Bonelight endures as a symbol of the Osmaris Sea’s mystery and peril.Effects On Observers

Watch it too long, and you’ll see your own grave reflected in the water."

Great work! I really love the name the Bonelight. The sense of mystery and eeriness you created is fantastic. It reminds me of the Dead Marshes in Return of the King. It also mixes a great wil-o-the-wisp and siren feeling to it. I dig how it is attached to a whole sea not just a swamp or individual beings or entities. The quotes are wonderful additions giving that lived in feeling. Hayley ^_^
