Icenado

"It wasn’t just a storm, it was a cold fury made flesh. The wind screamed with the voices of the damned, and the ice… the ice tore through everything like it had a mind of its own. When it passed, the world was quiet, frozen, and dead."
— lone survivor of the Varnakar Expedition
An Icenado is a rare and catastrophic supernatural storm, a swirling vortex of frost and ice imbued with raw elemental magic. Towering and radiant with an eerie blue-white glow, it carves a path of frozen destruction, shredding everything in its wake with razor-sharp shards of ice. Formed in regions of magical instability or where elemental forces collide, Icenados leave behind permafrost and jagged ice sculptures, their aftermath as haunting as their appearance. Legends speak of their origins, from frost wyrms and winter gods to curses born of betrayal. Survivors recount eerie whispers in their winds and tales of the mythical Iceheart Core at their center, a relic of unimaginable power. To encounter an Icenado is to face the wrath of the frozen sky itself, an event both feared and revered across Domen Aria.

Description

The Icenado appears as a towering vortex of swirling frost and ice, glowing with an otherworldly blue-white light. Its spiraling winds are filled with razor sharp shards of crystalline ice that gleam like broken glass in the storm’s eerie luminescence. These shards are suspended in its rotation, moving at deadly speeds, capable of shredding flesh, armor, and even stone. The core radiates an unnatural cold, pulsing with a faint, ethereal glow, while frost and snow trail behind it like a ghostly veil. As it moves, the Icenado freezes everything in its path, leaving behind jagged permafrost, glittering ice formations, and an eerie silence in the aftermath of its devastation.

Manifestation

An Icenado manifests with an ominous stillness in the air, followed by a bone-chilling drop in temperature. The sky darkens unnaturally, heavy clouds swirling as if pulled by an unseen force. Frost rapidly creeps across the ground, and the sound of distant, otherworldly wails fills the air. Suddenly, the vortex descends from the clouds, a spiraling column of crystalline ice and howling winds, glowing with an eerie blue-white light. Shards of jagged ice spiral within, shredding anything caught in its path. The storm’s core radiates a haunting, ethereal cold, freezing the very air as it consumes the land in its frozen wrath.
"Every Icenado is born of a sin, betrayal, greed, or vengeance. Mark my words, it is not the storm that hunts you, but your own guilt made flesh."
— High Priestess Anvareth, oracle of the Ice Rock Refuge

Localization

Icenados are most likely to form in desolate, frostbitten regions where the boundaries between the mortal world and the elemental planes of cold and water are thin. These include the glacial tundras of the far north, cursed mountain passes perpetually locked in winter, and regions like the Frostbound Citadel, where ancient magic lingers in the land. They are also known to arise in magically unstable zones, such as sites of catastrophic magical battles or areas tainted by elemental disruptions. Occasionally, an Icenado might manifest over a frozen sea, dragging icy waves and wreaking havoc on nearby ships and coastal settlements. Locations rumored to produce these events are:   The Ice Veins of Varnakar: Deep in the northern tundra, the Ice Veins are a labyrinth of frozen caverns and geysers of magical frost. Elemental magic flows unchecked here, creating ideal conditions for Icenados to spiral into existence during magical surges or natural seasonal transitions.   The Shardspire Expanse: A desolate expanse of jagged ice peaks and frozen lakes, the Shardspire Expanse is said to be the site of an ancient battle between frost giants and white dragons. Residual magic in the region fuels unpredictable weather, with Icenados being the most feared of these phenomena.   The Sea Of Frozen Ships: This treacherous, icy ocean is littered with the wrecks of ships. Icenados occasionally appear here, forming over the glimmering, star-like ice floes. Sailors believe these storms are summoned by vengeful spirits of drowned mariners or ancient sea deities.   Wyrm’s Grasp Glacier: A massive glacier carved with natural channels resembling the claw marks of a titanic beast. Legend holds that an ancient frost wyrm was slain here, and its death curse causes the formation of Icenados when the glacier "weeps" during rare thaws.   The Frostbound Citadel: A legendary fortress carved into the heart of a colossal glacier, the Frostbound Citadel is steeped in ancient magic. Icenados frequently form in its proximity, believed to be echoes of the elemental forces that imprisoned a demi-god within. These storms serve as both a natural defense and a warning to intruders.

Icenado Effects

Physical Devastation: The sheer force of the winds can level forests, destroy buildings, and scatter armies. The ice shards cut through anything they touch, leaving the landscape desolate and scarred.   Frostbite Aura: The air temperature around an Icenado drops to lethal levels. Prolonged exposure can freeze people solid where they stand, and survivors are often left with severe frostbite.   Elemental Magic Disruption: The raw magic fueling the Icenado interferes with spellcasting, making fire and earth magic unstable and often outright ineffective. Only skilled elementalists attuned to water, air, or cold can hope to manipulate the storm, and even then, at great peril.   Summoning Of Frost Entities: Sometimes, the chaotic magic of the Icenado spawns Frost Wraiths, Ice Golems, or other elemental creatures within its rotation. These beings disperse when the Icenado fades but wreak havoc while it lasts.
"We thought we had outrun it. Then the frost crept in under the door, and the whispers began. By the time we saw the ice shards spinning through the night, it was already too late."
— Marleth Hainsworth, lone survivor of the Frostwood caravan disaster

Theoretical Origins

Icenados are believed to form when intense concentrations of elemental water and air magic clash in extremely cold regions, often in areas where the boundaries between the mortal realm and elemental planes have weakened. Some legends claim they are conjured by the wrath of frost spirits or as punishment from deities of winter and storms. Others whisper they are the remnants of ancient magical battles or curses lingering in the land.
"The Icenado is no mere storm. It is the wrath of winter given form, a hunger that swallows warmth and life alike. Pray it never finds you."
— Karn Hawkblade, Northern ranger and guide

Rumors

Spawned By Frost Wyrms: A common tale among northern hunters is that Icenados are not natural phenomena but the breath of frost wyrms sleeping deep beneath the glaciers. When disturbed, these wyrms unleash their icy fury in the form of the storm.   The Whispering Souls: Survivors swear they can hear the voices of the dead within the howling winds of an Icenado. Some claim these are the cries of those it has consumed, trapped eternally in its vortex, begging for release.   The Frozen Heart Curse: It’s said that anyone who gazes into the eye of an Icenado and survives will be cursed with a frozen heart, slowly turning their body to ice unless they find an ancient fire relic to counteract the spell.   Gateways To The Elemental Plane of Ice: Some scholars believe that the core of an Icenado acts as a temporary portal to the Elemental Plane of Ice or to Zimno, God Of Cold. Adventurers foolish enough to approach the vortex may find themselves pulled through and stranded in a frozen realm.   Born Of Betrayal: Legends say that Icenados can form where great acts of betrayal have occurred, particularly in frozen landscapes. The storm represents the icy grip of vengeance, seeking to punish those connected to the treachery.   The Iceheart’s Call: Treasure seekers believe that the core of an Icenado, known as the Iceheart Core, is a shard of unimaginable magical power. However, it is rumored to lure the greedy into its storm, testing their worth, or consuming them for their hubris.   Sentient Storms: Some elementalists claim that Icenados are alive, imbued with an ancient intelligence. They say the storms actively hunt warm-blooded creatures, drawn to their life heat, and avoid barren landscapes where they find no prey.   Heralds Of A Winter God: Northerners whisper that Icenados are not random but omens of an ancient winter deity stirring in its slumber. The more frequent the storms, the closer the god comes to awakening.
