The Legacy Project
The Legacy Project was an attempt by two archwizards to prevent the wholesale destruction of the world presaged in Otori's revelatory vision.
A Blueprint to Save the World
Two archwizards, Adrius Vespasius and Ozwald Diabel D'Gazeron, collaborated on the Legacy Project to ensure some record of the world continued on through the coming apocalypse predicted by Otori's Revelation and their own assessments of the cosmos. However, with Adrius incarcerated under Demon Mountain, and neither wizard able to independently source information on that scale, they turned to developing a self-updating repository by means of a third agent which they dubbed "Legacy."The Maze Engine
The Maze Engine was initially created by Primordials of Law as a prediction model. It was a simulated microcosm of the Verse and could be used to accurately model the results of changes in the world. In some ways, it was analogous to the great Ordering Machine of Primus. The Maze Engine had come to be located in the Black Chasm south of Emanys, and Oz had sealed it away within a nearly indestructible vault accessible only by means of a unique hexagonal prism staff of caelestite. The Project
To achieve their ends, Oz and Adrius designed a construct capable of being sent through a time rift to manually gather information and records. However, because such rifts are exceedingly rare and even more difficult to detect, the archwizards would not be able to count on the construct returning except through the passage of time. When Legacy eventually made it back, the wizards would preform necessary repairs and transcribe the newly collected knowledge of the construct into specially designed tablets of caelestite. Then, Oz would transport Legacy back to the temporal rift to continue the process with new parameters. The ultimate goal was the creation of a repository containing the sum total of knowledge from the beginning of the historical record in order to utilize the Maze Engine to restore some semblance of the world after the apocalypse. Though this goal was ultimately unattainable, they considered the project reasonably complete in 1014 SA 5, with over 30,000 years cumulative across all treks made by successive Legacy generations. By this point, they had exceeded their ability to continue recording data and instead shifted focus to integrating the repository with the Maze Engine. When their work was done, Oz left Legacy as caretaker of the project.
