Creighton the Owl

Creighton is a wise old owl who lives in a park in the center of the city which shares his name, though it is unclear whether the owl or the town were the first to bear the name.

Origins Lost to Time

It is said that Creighton has lived at the site of the city since before any barbarian hill chief barrow was built in the Grey Downs. Some estimates age Creighton at more than one thousand years old, and certainly the owl is ancient. He's the last living speaker of several languages no longer spoken locally or otherwise, and speaks with authority on matters of ancient history. Some scholars on local history have posited the owl to be a minor god or spirit of wisdom revered by an ancient people native to the region long ago.

Relationship with Locals

The citizens of Creighton believe that the Owl is a sort of moral guide for the city's leadership, defending the city by advising community leaders in such a way as to avert crises. Thus when tragedy does arise, politicians are sometimes held responsible, with many tending to believe they did not attend closely enough to the counsel of the owl. Many such leaders see themselves quickly fallen into disgrace and shunned, their careers facing a hurdle that is difficult to surmount. As a de facto town elder, Creighton is also sometimes called on to advise on auspicious names for children, matchmaking, and other, less far reaching concerns.

Of course, Creighton has inspired many groups to be active in the community, most notably the Friends of the Owl. Even adventurers associate with Creighton for guidance on quests, and the usefulness of this valuable source of wisdom is one of the reasons for the existence of Hammerhand Hall. Surely, without the presence of the wise old owl, there would be no such concentration of adventure-minded folk congregating in Creighton.
