Hand of Mercy
The Hand of Mercy is a religious charity devoted to Bhanviel, the goddess of healing and mercy. Its core mission is to ease suffering in all its forms. Priests and priestesses channel the divine energy of their patron to heal, protect, and comfort those in need. Deacons provide shelter for the wounded and the unfortunate, raise funds for the poor, and offer prayers even for the wicked.
Structure
The Archpriestess of Bhanviel serves as the spiritual leader of the Hand. Under her, several clerics wield divine gifts to serve the suffering.
Deacons oversee the financial affairs of the temple and handle logistics.
Volunteers from all walks of life are welcomed and encouraged to offer aid however they can.
The Hand's headquarters is located in Fiorlas, but it operates chapters throughout Doriande and even abroad.
Culture
Members of the Hand are known for their humility and selflessness. They believe that mercy has the power to redeem even the worst of souls.
Public Agenda
The Hand of Mercy aims to heal and protect anyone in need, regardless of allegiance or background.
Its secondary goal is to spread the teachings of Mother Bhanviel.
Assets
The central temple in Fiorlas serves as the base of operations. The organization also maintains smaller temples and sanctuaries throughout the countryside and cities of Doriande.
History
Bhanviel has been worshipped in Doriande since the Age of Monsters. In those early times, prayers were offered for loved ones' survival and healers sought divine guidance. Shrines were built in her name, and offerings were made in times of illness and grief.
During the The Trade War, the demand for healers soared. After eleven years of escalating casualties, a group of dedicated clergy and medics formalized their efforts into a new institution. The Hand of Mercy was founded to promote peace and forgiveness, and to care for victims of war. The founding was led by Mother Valyane of Fiorlas, who became the first Archpriestess.
The Hand played a pivotal role in the aftermath of the two invasions of Doriande.
Its members aided in rebuilding efforts, cared for orphans, and advocated for The Alliance of the Forts and subsequently for the Charter of Unification
Today, the Hand counts many prominent citizens among its members. While some join out of genuine belief, others may do so for political gain. The Hand accepts all who come with the intention to help, as they believe every soul can be redeemed.
Mythology & Lore
Legend holds that Bhanviel once appeared before Mother Valyane as a dying soldier clad in the colors of the enemy. Valyane took her in and tended to her wounds. When other Dorians tried to strike the woman down, Valyane defended her with her own body. In that moment, Bhanviel revealed her divine nature, shining with a light brighter than Nir and commanding silence. From then on, Valyane was seen as her chosen vessel.
Tenets of Faith
- Mercy is the mightiest weapon.
- Suffering knows no border, color, or fang size.
- No pain shall be dismissed, whether of body or mind.
- When struck with force, strike back with kindness.
- Treat the enemy, as you would treat the friend.
Ethics
Sin is not just committing harm—it is also the failure to act when help is needed.
Worship
Daily worship is not centered on formal prayers but on acts of kindness. A coin given to the poor, a helping hand, or a heartfelt apology are seen as the truest offerings to Bhanviel.
Priesthood
Priests and priestesses are educated at the Academy of Fiorlas. Many are orphans adopted and raised by the Hand within temple walls.
Granted Divine Powers
Bhanviel blesses chosen individuals with divine healing and protective powers. Though her criteria are not always clear, those who bear her gifts are respected and revered.
Political Influence & Intrigue
The Hand of Mercy has played a major role in Doriande's history. It continues to be active in the kingdom's affairs, often speaking out on behalf of the vulnerable. Most recently, it opposed legislation aimed at excluding immigrants from Caleh, straining relations with the Royal Council.
