Gods/Patrons
These are some gods I am familiar with and how they fit into my setting. Most come from other D&D settings, and generally their aesthetics and dogma are the same, but their lore is different. These gods are presented in no specific order. If you want a table that includes more simplified information see: this google sheet.
Bane
Bane was a wholly malevolent and brutal deity that distanced himself from mere mortals, preferring to reign over his followers from afar. He savored the terror he instilled in others and the hatred that formed in mortals' hearts. Bane rules over the first layer of Acheron, sometimes referred to as the Banehold. Bane's rules his tyrannical empire with an iron fist, and an eye towards other planes. Erathis, god of civilization, despises Bane for having crushed many new civilizations before they had the chance to blossom. He has a working relationship with Shar, god of darkness, and would often discuss war plans with the Red Knight over chess. If his plans come to fruition he would rule all of Acheron and Bytopia. Helm, the protector, will not let this happen.Laduguer
(LA-duh-gwur) Laduguer was once a member of the Morndinsamman. The gold and shield dwarves claimed he committed unspeakable crimes and was only saved from Moradin's wrath by Berronar Truesilver's mercy. The grey dwarves, who would become duergar, said he was an advocate of righteous, innovative philosophy that offended Moradin so much that he cast him out. Along with the Morndinsamman, Laduguer also earned the emnity of Lolth, whose followers the Duergar now had to share space with in the Underdark. His sole friend was Torog, an ancient underdark deity who taught him much of the slave trade.Hextor
Hextor is a devil from the Nine Hells who works directly under Asmodeus. As a show of good-will from Asmodeus, Hextor currently trains Bane's legions in the citadel of Scourgehold in Acheron. He holds some ancient grudge against Erynthul, but no one knows what it is. Some rumors say Hextor betrayed Erynthul to gain favor with Asmodeus. Some claim they were brothers, and Erynthul was banished from their family. Some less credible sources say they were once married.Avandra
Avandra is a member of the Seladrine, though she has many followers other than Elves. She is the God of change and freedom, and many nomadic peoples, travelers, and halflings have taken to her. When the world was young, Avandra was deeply involved in the lives of its creatures. She delighted in making their lives better. One mortal who was the object of Avandra's favor was a beautiful woman who was pursued by a cruel suitor. This suitor set his servants on her like hunting dogs. Two times Avandra helped the woman to flee or fight by changing her luck, and each time the woman praised Avandra after her escape. The third time the woman was threatened, Avandra gifted her with the power to change her form so that she could save herself from any future threat. The woman used her power to become an assassin, killing her suitor and all who served him. When Avandra sought her out to rebuke her, the woman used her power to hide from the goddess. By the time Avandra found the woman, her children's children had given birth to many more offspring, all having the power to change shape. The goddess's gift, once given, could not be taken away. Thus the race of doppelgangers and their descendants, the changelings, were born. From that episode Avandra learned a bitter lesson about being overly generous to mortals. Ever since then, she has been careful to help mortals only in small ways, often hiding her hand. By allowing mortals to face their own problems, Avandra provides them with the chance to discover their full potential.Sehanine Moonbow
The Lady of Dreams is an elven goddess of death, dreams, heavens, journeys, moon (full moon to be precise), moon elves, stars, and transcendence as well as the most powerful female member of the Seldarine.Tarsellis Meunniduin
Tarsellis is a minor elven god of mountains, rivers, and wilderness. He is typically worshipped by the northern snow elves.Val
Val was once an elf who created many wonderful subjects to help the elves. In time, he ascended to godhood and his servants, today known as the Court of Arcadia, served the Elves he walked among. However, after a bloody war the Seladrine had brought the Elves into, he left the Prime Material Plane with his court and created his own: Arcadia. Modern scholars believe he has repaired his relationship with the Elvish gods, and often lets them walk among us his Fey in Arcadia.Melora
Keeper of the wilderness, she represents the wild creatures of nature, the rush of the angry rapids, and the heat-harried stillness of the desert. Druids take up her worship, as do hunters of natural lands, accepting her guidance to exist harmoniously within savage lands. She also symbolises natural beauty, both of the wilds and of mortalkind.Solonor Thelandira
The elven god of hunting, archery, and survival in wild and harsh places. He taught his followers the arts of hunting; including archery, moving unseen, and hiding in the wild places. He watches over the borders of wilderness and farmed land and seeks to maintain the balance between them.Helm
Helm's origin is unknown. He is always depicted wearing a suit of full plate, completely obscuring his being. He serves a watchful protector of Bytopia. The God of guardians, protection, and protectors, worshiped by guards and paladins both. The Vigilant One had long been seen as a cold and focused deity who impartially took the role of defender of his plane. Erathis thinks of Helm as his friend and close ally for the aid he provides to burgeoning new civilizations. Helm stands in the way of Asmodeus and Bane, who would see anything that does not work for them crushed under their heel.Tempus
Tempus concerned himself mainly with honorable combat, forbidding cowardice and encouraging the use of force of arms to settle disputes. He is not heartless, but exuberant, said to live only for excess, whether it be love for food, drink, hunting, or his greatest passion, battle. Tempus's passion was shared with Valkur, and the two were rumored at one point to be lovers. He is often depicted riding into battle wearing little armor other than gauntlets and a large helm. The Lord of Battle, fathered the Red Knight, who would help grow into a brilliant tactician and aided him in many battles, only he knows her true name. Her tactics would prove invaluable during his battle against Garagos, who he took his title of God of War from. The Red Knight
The Lady of Strategy was raised by Tempus, and by watching his battles, she formulate tactics of war. In time her strategic prowess became unmatched. She kept her true name secret, knowing that if anyone discovered it, they would gain insight into every strategy and war plan throughout the planes. The dogma of the Lady of Strategy dictated the use of careful tactics to wage war, for only through masterful planning could lasting victory be won. Tempus was a berserker before she began to guide his sword. Eventually, he would use her guidance to usurp Garagos as the God of War.Vandria Gilmadrith
Vandria is the elvish deity of war, specifically of grief and sorrow it can cause. Because of this, much of the Seladrine do not associate with her outside of war times. But when her people need her, she is there to guide the swords of elves and prevent further grief. Some legends say she was once an elvish queen, whose husband fell into a blind hatred, leading his people into an unending war, causing untold sorrow amongst his people.Moradin
The Soul Forger was strength incarnate and force of will embodied, a harsh but fair judge who evaluated his creations by the goodness of their works first and intentions second. The Dwarffather inspired dwarven inventions and constantly sought to improve their race, encouraging a good-natured, intelligent, and harmonious existence with other good races while battling their pride and isolationist tendencies. He has said to be the first dwarf, who fathered (with the help of Berronar Truesilver his wife) the first dwarves. He was betrayed by his son Laduguer, though the exact crime committed is unclear. Laduguer was nearly killed by Moradin himself, but was saved by by Berronar, who elected to banish him from the realm instead.“Every fall of the hammer on the anvil, every fire stoked in the forge, is a step on a journey set before me by Moradin himself.
It isn't work. It is a challenge to achieve greatness.”
— Balifra Eversharp
Berronar Truesilver
Wife of Moradin, sometimes called Dwarfmother, Berrona Truesilver was seen as a figure of high authority. She was seen as loving and caring to her kin, but only by dwarven standards.Lathander
Sometimes referred to as The Morninglord, Lathander was the god of the rising sun and rebirth. His was an eternal optimism, a constant willingness to focus on hopes for the future rather than wallow in the failures of the present. He was a doggedly determined god who encouraged proactive altruism and constant reevaluation of the old ways. Exuberant and friendly, his interests laid in vibrant life (regarding both birth and nature), and conversely urged the destruction of the corrupted mockeries of life that he saw the undead as. Lathander grew to be great friends with Bahamut, sharing a similar love for mortals. His enemies included Shar, Asmodeus, and Tiamat, along with anyone else who sought to bring evil to the mortal realm."Offer prayers to Lathander, and his light will shield thee.”
— A statue in Idyllgle
Merikka
Merikka, the Lady of Changing Seasons, is a Goddess of Agriculture. She inspired growth and crops and helped farms coordinate their growth. She looked to Lathander as a mentor, and often worked cooperatively with Erathis to build new civilizations. Merikka had few enemies and little power to combat them with if she need to, but she despised evil gods, particularly Shar, for the grief they would bring to her worshippers. Clerics of Merikka coordinate groups of farmers so that everyone’s crops are planted and harvested at the optimal time, mediate between warring family members, care for pregnant women, and officiate coming-of-age and marriage ceremonies. They enforce laws and punish lawbreakers where other officials are unavailable.Corellon Larethian
The Creator of Elves, he is seen as the founder of elvish society. Being the first elf, he sees much of the pantheon he interacts with as his children, even Lolth, who betrayed him and was cast out of the Seladrine. He approved of those who killed orcs and followers of Lolth, blessed those who aided others, and became angered at those who defiled the dead, or fled from their foes.Torog
In the days of creation before the Dawn War, Torog had a hated rival, a monstrous primordial named Gargash, who went into the Underdark to experiment with powers of torture and imprisonment. Torog entered the Underdark in order to destroy his nemesis at the moment before the Dawn War broke out between the gods and the primordials; Torog and Gargash were thus both left behind. They fought a violent battle in which Torog finally gained the upper hand. As Gargash felt his strength disappearing, he cursed Torog to never heal from his wounds and to never be able to leave the Underdark. The King that Crawls is the first God of the Underdark. It is believed he took Lolth and Laduguer under his wing after their exile from their respective pantheons. Lathander, who has long since forgotten of Torog, gave him the information of Gargash's location hoping to turn the two against each other. As such Torog holds a deep hatred for the Morninglord.Vecna
Vecna was a once-human king and lich from Oerth who ascended to godhood. While he was once considered the most powerful lich to dwell on that world, over the ages he spent in undeath Vecna became maligned across the multiverse, and was considered the scourge of all civilization."Evil is not an absence of good. It is not a choice. Evil is one of two forces in the cosmos, an agency locked in eternal struggle against its antithesis.
Only good and evil exist. And not even a hair's width of space separates them.”
— Vecna
Vecna is dead, killed by his right hand Kas, who severed his left and and left eye in the process. It is said that those who attain these artifacts will receive a portion of the god's unholy power.
Garagos
(Gah-rah-gohs) The Master of All Weapons was the primary god of war before Tempus stripped him of this title. Often depicted with six or more arms, Garagos was a force of primeval fury on the battlefield, taking delight in the slaughter of his foes. His followers refer to Tempus as the Usurper, hoping that they may one day empower Garagos enough that he may take back his throne. The White King
The White King is the most recent King of Limbo, and has not held the throne for long. As ruler of the Thrones of Chaos, he commands the Court of All Flesh, though rarely bothers himself with such matters, leaving much of the decision making to his wife, The Red Queen. Worshippers of the White King usually worship the Thrones of Chaos more so than who ever currently sit atop them. Warlocks and dark priests of old still consider all these courtiers as newcomers on the stage, and they lament the passing in favor of the Unseeing Karras Vor and the Reflection of Mor-Lu, whom they consider greater and more powerful than these lesser beings. The Red Queen
Wife to the White King, she takes charge over much of his realm. She takes pleasure in loaning out the Court of All Flesh to various forces of Chaos across the multiverse.Erathis
The Lawbearer is the god of civilization and invention. She takes pleasure in seeing civilizations grow and blossom. She is friends with Helm for the protection he offers to cities and Ioun for the knowledge she spreads. Erathis is one of the few gods on cordial terms with Asmodeus, as dystopia is just as much a civilization as utopia. She is opposed by creators of the untamed wilderness and chaos such as Malar and Erthynul. A recent pet project of hers is a civilization composed of Minotaurs from the Abyss. Having defeated Baphomet in combat, some minotaurs followed her out of the Abyss to Mechanus. Mechanus, for all the laws it keeps in order, is no place for a civilization. Erathis took her new followers to the Underdark and carved out a small space for them to establish themselves.Labelas Enoreth
The Lord of Continuum is the Lawful Neutral entity who governs the orderly passage of time and guarded against those who would alter the path of history. He oversees the long life span of the elves. His symbol was the setting sun.The Triad (Tyr, Ilmater, and Torm)
The Triad was an alliance of three good-aligned deities: Tyr the Maimed God, god of justice; Ilmater the Broken God, god of suffering and compassion; and Torm the True, god of duty. After the Spellplague , the dragon god of justice, Bahamut, became a member of the Triad, temporarily replacing Tyr until his return after the Second Sundering. The Triad is seen as an ideal representation of justice. Torm, would apprehend criminals or ne'er-do-wells and speak truthfully about their actions. Ilmater would speak to their defense, show them the err in their ways, and hope to reform them. Tyr would act as judge, sentencing them to a respectable but fair punishment. The Triad was often depicted fighting Bane, and stopping his conquest into the good aligned planes. Some stories tell of Ilmater being rescued from Bane's dungeons by Torm.Bahamut
Bahamut is the dragon god of justice, and worshipped by metallic dragons. His natural form is that of a platinum dragon, said by many to be the last of his kind. He is also the eternal rival of his sister Tiamat, queen of the chromatic dragons. Bahamut is stern and very disapproving of evil. He accepted no excuses for evil acts, and didn't tolerate even minor offenses by evil creatures. In spite of his stance, he is also considered one of the most compassionate beings in the multiverse. He has limitless empathy for the downtrodden, the dispossessed, and the helpless. He usually preferred to polymorph those who had offended him instead of killing them, although it was also said that Bahamut loathed to sully himself with the blood of evil creatures. By draconic standards, Bahamut was neither vain nor desirous of treasure. He values wisdom, knowledge, prophecies, and songs instead. He oftened shared his hoard of knowledge with Ioun, who gave him great company sharing his love for knowledge. He used the great wealth he had amassed over the ages to help those in need, while using the magic items he had gathered to further his goals. However, he also pursued viciously (usually sending his champions and followers) those who tried to steal the hoard from his palace as, after all, he was a god of justice. Bahamut also liked to prove the strength and worthiness of his followers by battling against them in his dragon form, halting the combat when his followers were injured or when they overcame him. However, he was prone to get carried away by his zeal, and had powerful healers on hand in case he had gravely injured one of his followers in those battles. While his court comprised only gold dragons, Bahamut enjoyed the company of all good dragons, delighting in their differences and varied personalities.Ioun
Ioun is the unaligned goddess of knowledge, prophecy and skill, and is a patron of the study of magic and mental power. She i is particularly revered by wizards, scholars, dragons and tacticians. Ioun urges her followers to spread information as much as possible. She often came into conflict with Vecna, who sought to keep secret many things.Gruumsh
Gruumsh is the main god of orcs. He was named He Who Never Sleeps for he was said to never tire, and symbolized with an ever-open eye to represent the orc belief that he watched over them all, judging the worth of each and every one of their kind. Gruumsh created the orcs and guided their destiny with the aid of his divine subordinates, ruling over orcish mortals and gods alike as their unquestioned patriarch. Long ago he swore that orcs would rule the world, and since then had driven his people to wage endless holy war in the name of his divine wrath."No! You lie! You have rigged the drawing of lots, hoping to cheat me and my followers. But One-Eye never sleeps; One-Eye sees all. There is a place for orcs to dwell... here! And here! And here again! There! There is where the orcs shall dwell! And they shall survive, and multiply, and grow stronger. And a day will come when they cover the world, and they shall slay all of your collected peoples! Orcs shall inherit the world you sought to cheat me of!”
— A telling of Gruumsh's mythical declaration of war against the other gods
Lolth
Lloth, known as the Queen of Spiders as well as the Queen of the Demonweb Pits, is the most influential goddess of the drow. Lolth is a goddess of cold cruelty not out of place in the darkest depths of the endless Abyss, reveling in betrayal and bloodshed and toying with everyone from her minions to her victims. She not only enjoys, but thrives upon torture, destruction, and death, whether personally performing it or causing it. Every interaction is ultimately done with malice, ill will seething from her every move, and even those who knew her well could be surprised by just how deep her viciousness went. Her malevolence could be compared to the rage of the brutal orc deity Gruumsh, but where his fury is as mindlessly violent as a force of nature, her malice is complicated and deliberate. Furthermore, Gruumsh could at least be said to be steady and constant in his hate, whilst Lolth's is utterly capricious. Once she was an elf diety among the Seladrine, but she was cast out after a viscous feud with Corellon. Her hatred and malice grew over time, partially twisting her form into that of a spider. Now her followers bide their time in the Underdark, gathering power to one day storm the surface and return to their home. Lolth imposes a strictly matriarchal society upon her people, and relishes the use of slaves.“Station is the way of Lolth, the ambition she bestows to further the chaos, to keep her drow "children" along their appointed course of self imprisonment.”
— Drizzt Do'Urden
Shar
Shar is the God of Darkness and Loss. She is the malevolent twin counterpart to the goddess of the moon, Selûne. The domain of The Mistress of the Night was not only that of dark places, including caverns, dungeons, and the Underdark, but of deeds done under darkness, of secrets, loss, hidden pain, and the ability to forget."Blessed Nightsinger, witness our adoration. See how we serve you, only you. We have emptied our hearts of falsehoods. We have vanquished your foes. In darkness, we see your truth. Embrace us, your loyal warriors. Cloak us in your shadow. Guide us to your victory. Shar's will shall be done. As sure as night will fall.”
— Shadowheart's prayer to Shar
Malar
The Beastlord was the epitome of the dark, bloody side of nature though in his more favorable aspects was worshiped by those who identified with the wild natures, grace and amorality of predators. Despite being revered as the hunger and hunting instinct of beasts among druid circles however, he despised The Balance of nature that druids and other nature deities sought to uphold.“It is ever the way of nature that the strongest should rule.”
— Malar explaining his philosophy
Erythnul
Erythnul (eh-RITH-null) is the god of Hate, Envy, Malice, Panic, Ugliness, and Slaughter. He is known as the Many, and is worshipped by many gnoll, troll, ogre, and bugbear tribes, in addition to humans. His symbol is a red blood drop, or a bestial mask representing Erythnul's changing visage. Erythnul is called the Many, because in battle his features continually shift from human to bugbear to troll to ogre to gnoll and back to human again. His spilled blood transforms into similar creatures. Erythnul delights in panic and slaughter. He can spread fear through his eyes. Erythnul's realm, the Citadel of Slaughter, is in the third layer of Pandemonium, Phlegethon. There, his domain appears to be the ruins of a great stone citadel. In the chill winds can be heard the sounds of a terrible battle. The maddened souls of Erythnul's faithful kill each other eternally. Erythnul himself joins in the melee, slaughtering an endless stream of his own worshippers. A giant sacrificial altar is said to exist at the center of it all. The chaos of battle is the sacred charge of the worshippers of Erythnul. In all the myriad forms of terror and suffering that war creates, there is a strange kind of unity. This is part of the reason that Erythnul is called the Many. Battle is a test of merit and strength, and living and dying by the sword is the definition of the good life. Many of Erythnul's worshippers believe that blood spilled in battle feeds their god, increasing his madness and bloodlust. Chaotic neutral worshippers believe that non-combatants and weak opponents are meaningless, and that killing them does nothing to satiate their god or prove their ability; killing those unworthy of a warrior's death even angers Erythnul, they believe. Chaotic evil worshippers, who are far more common, disagree, believing that all slaughter is a sacrament, and that the dying screams of innocents are music to Erythnul's ears, hymns in the church of the battlefield. He holds some ancient grudge against Hextor, but no one knows what it is. Some rumors say Hextor betrayed Erynthul to gain favor with Asmodeus. Some claim they were brothers, and Erynthul was banished from their family. Some less credible sources say they were once married. Erythnul is credited with creating the windblades and garngraths, races of fiends native to Pandemonium. In the least violent services to Erythnul, shrill reed instruments are played discordantly while gongs clash and drums pound. During major rites, a fire is built and victims are sacrificed. One famous rite is the "Bloody Howl," when soldiers captured from the previous battle are killed in order to bring Erythnul's favor just before the next one. Prayers to Erythnul are customarily rhyming chants with gory subject matter.Raven Queen
The Raven Queen, Matron of Death is the goddess of death, fate, and winter and watches over the transition between life and death. Her devotees seek her favor to guide them in death and prevent the curse of undeath from falling on them. Because of her hatred of undeath, she and the Demon Prince of Undeath, Orcus, are fierce enemies.“The Raven Queen is trapped by her fascination with the past. She sits in her fortress, amidst all the memories of the world, looking at the ones that please her most as though they were glittering jewels. Many great wizards have attempted to understand her motives, but like a raven she has always remained cryptic, keeping her cache of secrets just out of their reach.”
— Alustriel Silverhand
Tharizdun
Tharizdun is a long forgotten interloper god who sought to destroy all that is. He created the Abyss, an act for which he was imprisoned by the gods at the bottom of his infinite plane. His followers hope to set him free.“Light must be snuffed, perfection decayed, order dissolved, and minds fragmented.”
— An inscription in one of Tharizdun's black pyramids.
Tharizdun's exact dogma is unknown, as the ages he was imprisoned in the Abyss along with his own growing insanity left him unable to communicate in a meaningful manner. Even when he appeared to his followers, he only spoke to them in the form of a shrieking babble that was impossible for mortals to comprehend. The following are his assumed teachings, followed by his cults.
“Channel power to the Chained God, so he can break his chains. Retrieve lost relics and shrines to the Chained God. Pursue the obliteration of the world, in anticipation of the Chained God's liberation."
Zehir
Zehir is one god of the Yuan-Ti. His methods were aggressive, yet subtle. He liked his wishes to be carried out quietly, but boldly and did not forgive failure, though those who continued to please him could expect to be richly rewarded. Zehiric clerics were called Venomers and he drew many worshipers from the ranks of the yuan-ti that were unhappy with the detachment of Sseth. High-ranking clerics were referred to as "Low Priests". In a society of snake men, being low was considered a positive attribute. The unholy gesture of Zehir was the sign of fangs.Baphomet
Baphomet is a demon lord who rules a layer of the Abyss called the Endless Maze. He is the Prince of Beasts and the Demon Lord of Minotaurs, an embodiment of savagery and an insidious force that wormed its way into the heart of his followers to deceive them into embracing brutality.“We are all beasts, and only delusion prevents you from seeing the truth.”
— Oostarix, Eater of Men and cultist of Baphomet.
Baphomet's followers embrace primal savagery. If their actions in life have sufficiently satisfied Baphomet's machinations, he will draw upon the power of their souls when they die to create a new Minotaur in the Abyss. This is considered a great honor.
Demogorgon
Demogorgon referred to as the Imprisoned One by some followers of Helm, is the deity of domination and the draining of energy, an embodiment of madness and destruction that sought to drag all down into the infinite depths of the Abyss. He is known by many names, called Siosivash by the yuan-ti, Leemooggoogoon the Deep Father by the kuo-toa, and Ahmon-Ibor the Sibilant Beast by the troglodytes. The first tanar'ri, formed from mortals' ancient fears, even his chosen race, the ixitxachitl, dare not speak his name aloud; it alone could inspire a primal terror. Inspiring fear in even other demon lords, his self-proclaimed title of Prince of Demons was won by virtue of power and influence; many demons challenged it, but none could defeat Demogorgon and claim it.“Know me then by my best name, mortal. You face Demogorgon, Prince of Demons.”
— Demogorgon
Graz'zt
Graz'zt is the demon prince of pleasure, decadence, and unlimited self-indulgence, as well as the patron of corrupt authorities and tyrants who would rule by force. The appearance of the The Dark Prince belied the true depths of his wickedness, his existence a warning that not that was beautiful was also good. All things are but playthings in the eyes of the Prince of Pleasure, he simply hadn't claimed them yet.“I live for the moment when I can turn something pure into something perverse.”
— Graz'zt
Juiblex
Juiblex (JOO-bleks) is a demon lord of oozes and shapeless things, a being that exemplifies the corruptive nature of the Abyss and that is almost glorious in its unrivaled obscenity. Ridiculed by its peers as "Lord of Nothing", the Faceless Lord is, even to them, a demon as revoltingly vile in body as it was inscrutably aberrant in mind. Unlike its kin, Juiblex does not have any schemes or machinations it seeks to make good on. Juiblex simply hungers. Some stories say it is the only thing left on its layer of the Abyss, having dissolved everything in its path. Those that serve Juiblex often concern themselves with summoning it or an aspect of it from the Abyss with the goal of having it devour everything in sight including them. Few of its supporters have rational minds left in their heads.“Juiblex is deemed a lesser figure in abyssal hierarchy, judged Lord of Nothing by his peers. However, in my research, I have plumbed the foul mire to examine the full darkness that is this disturbing fiend.”
— Demonomicon of Iggwilv
Orcus
Returned from undeath but not technically alive, the Demon Lord of Undeath is the multiverse's staunchest advocate for stagnation, seeking to exterminate all life, to darken and desolate all worlds, until all that remained in his static reality are undead moved only by his will. The Blood Lord is believed to be one of the mightiest demon lords, one that inspired dread in the hearts of gods. The Shadow That Was is among the powers of the Abyss most often worshipped as deity by the mortals of the Prime Material plane, and even more than the Prince of Demons himself, is close to obtaining true divinity. The relic most-often associated with the Prince of the Undead is the artifact known as the Wand of Orcus, a skull-topped wand with the power to slay any living being. The wand believed by some to be the only means to nullify Orcus' power, and is highly coveted across the planes. It was occasionally left available for mortals to seize, in order grant them the power to wreak chaos and evil across their worlds.“I will be the last creature when I am done. The cosmos will then be perfect, free of the braying abominations that are all other living things.”
— Orcus
Orcus is one third of the triad of demon lords―including Graz'zt and Demogorgon―that engaged in ongoing war with one another. He views Graz'zt as a self-aggrandized narcissist, and is believed to have warred with Demogorgon for hundreds of thousands of years.
The Prince of the Undead developed strong enmity with the Raven Queen, the goddess of death that dwells within the Shadowfell. Followers of the Raven Queen vehemently opposed those that venerated Orcus due to their conflicting views on undeath. At one point, Orcus and his minions carried out a series of schemes in an ongoing effort to strip her of her divine powers.
For a brief time, he forged a tenuous alliance with Yeenoghu the Lord of Savagery, and Iggwilv, the mortal daughter of Baba Yaga. Orcus and Iggwilv became involved in an elaborate scheme to overthrow Demogorgon as Prince of Demons.
His worship often attracted malevolent humans, orcs, ogres, giants, and goblinoids, along with at least one line of lineage of red dragons. His cults also attracted twisted creatures with a morbid fascination undeath. Notable among these followers necromancers, and others deliberately seeking the path to unlife via lichdom or vampirism. Among the undead that dwelled within Orcus' palace or otherwise joined his armies were were zombies, wights, shadows, huecuvae, nightwalkers, sheet phantoms, and death knights.
Yeenoghu
Yeenoghu (yee-NAG-hoo) is a demon lord and the chief being worshiped by gnolls. Dedicated only to destruction, the Ruler of Ruin seeks the collapse of civilization and he would brutally butcher all that stood between him and his rabid slaughter.“His demands are simple: kill. Follow his commands, and you shall know blessings beyond your dreams.”
— Zaiden, closest servant of Yeenoghu
Yeenoghu's desires are savage in nature, wanting slaughter and destruction above all else. He takes great pleasure in inflicting terror and sorrow before his victims' deaths, destroying treasured possessions and crushing their hopes. He despises civilization and if he were to conquer other realms, abyssal or otherwise, he would not attempt to rebuild their former structures.
To the Beast of Butchery, the gnolls were both his instruments and children, whom he sought to use to bring his ideal world to fruition. Such a world would be one of endless combat and brutality, where gnolls ruled supreme and all other creatures would be either slaves or food. Ultimately when the mortal world possessed one final champion he would challenge them to battle, slay them, and preside victoriously in his version of paradise; a wasteland of decaying corpses, in an absolutely ruined world.
Despite his savage nature, Yeenoghu is not stupid, being capable of subtlety and trickery, but merely choosing not to use it in most circumstances. He actively encourages the arrival of new races into his followers, recognizing the lack of his people's unity.
Kord
Kord is depicted as a hugely muscular man with a red beard and long red hair. He wears a fighting girdle made from a red dragon's hide, gauntlets from a white dragon's hide, and boots from a blue dragon's hide. He wields the greatsword Kelmar in battle. Kord is sometimes depicted by his urbanized faithful as a more civilized athlete or wrestler. Kord served as one of few friends to Erythnul. One story purports that the two unstoppable fighters raged in battle for 1 month straight, unable to kill the other, until finally collapsing and forming a tenuous kinship over the bout. Some legends also tell of him attempting to court Tarsellis, the elven god of nature. He is a foe of dragonkind, especially lawful evil dragons. Kord's favorite heralds are titans. The World Tree
Yggdrasil is so massive that it could almost be considered a plane in its own right. It even has certain planar characteristics of its own, such as a mild affinity towards chaos and a mild enhancement of plant- and chaotic-related spells. The tree's roots are in Niflheim (the second layer of Hades). Other roots and branches penetrate the Prime planes, allowing travelers to climb the tree until they reached a portal very similar to a color pool and step through to their destination. The tree touches all layers of the Beastlands and Elysium. Yggdrasil has become the subject of worship among some druid cultures, calling on its powers to heal wounded creatures and promote growth of new plant life. "Down the tree is easy; back up is hard." — Tisk the ratatoskValkur
The Captain of Waves is often depicted sailing the harsh sees and meeting many new creatures. He formed a few friendships amongst gods who were similarly inclined to brawling, such as Tempus and Kord, but still despises evil creatures. Many of his exploits have been turned into see shanties by his following.Bale
The Unending Tempest is a supernatural weather phenomenon in the sea to the northwest of the Tenebrian pennisula. Some sects of sailors regard successfully sailing the storm as a great feat, others think its a task for fools seeking death. Some scholars believe the eye of the storm could be used as a means to enter the Astral Sea. Sects druids and clerics have begun to worship the storm, and call upon its power to smite their enemies.Mushrooms
Seen as a force of decay by some and a form of rebirth by others, mushrooms represent the natural decomposition of life into a new form to be reborn.Asmodeus
Asmodeus is the deity of indulgence and ruler of all devils. Asmodeus was a patron of oppression and power, the greatest devil, and the Lord of the Ninth and overlord of the Nine Hells as a whole.“I am known by many names. The Lord of Nessus. The Raging Fiend. But you know me as―”
— Asmodeus
Asmodeus doesn't need mortal worship to either maintain or enhance his power, but rather wanted to lure mortals to worship to receive their souls and heal his wounds. Nevertheless, Asmodeus has a large following, much larger than any other infernal cult combined, such that his is often the first choice for prospective devil-worshipers.
According to legend, Asmodeus attributed his wicked deeds to necessity and the mandates of law, alluding to the rules of Hell in his defense and arguing that his contracts were never broken. He made the case that the souls he harvested served the ultimately noble end of protecting the cosmos, and noted the sanctity of law as what separated him from the demons of the Abyss. Without him and his devils to defend it, he argued, the multiverse would be overrun by demonkind and ultimately destroyed, and in this, Asmodeus might technically be correct.
Asmodeus was also the inventor of the Infernal language.
Tiamat
Tiamat is the lawful evil dragon goddess of greed, queen of evil dragons and, for a time, reluctant servant of the gods Bane and later Asmodeus. Tiamat is also the eternal rival of her brother Bahamut, ruler of the good metallic dragons. Tiamat is a unique chromatic dragon, who has one head for each primary color of the most common species of chromatics (black, blue, green, red, white). Each head is able to operate entirely independently of each other and had the powers of a member of the respective race of dragonkind. Her body also has traits in common with a wyvern, including a long tail tipped with a venomous stinger. Tiamat is arrogant, greedy, hateful, spiteful and vain. She never forgices any kind of slight and is focused on obtaining more power and wealth. She dismissed mortals, regarding them as mere disposable tools in her schemes. When needed, she was charming and fey, but her self-serving and reptilian personality betrayed her sooner or later. After having experienced relative mortality as an archfiend, she became less reckless but also paranoid. She has an insatiable greed for treasures, but preferrs that her followers bring it to her in the form of gifts instead of searching for riches on her own. Tiamat is the antithesis of her brother Bahamut, as both of them represented opposing values, and this enmity is reflected in the attitude of each deity's worshipers as well. She is also at odds with her brother Null for some slight lost to history. The god of the kobolds, Kurtulmak, is also her servant. Many evil dragons have worshiped Tiamat since their species first appeared, and kobolds believed she was their creator, and although they didn't worship her as god, they revered her as their creator.Primus
Primus is the manifestation of perfect logic and strict order. It is linked with the plane of Mechanus and they share the same goals and actions. While some believe it only concerns itself with the plane's inhabitants, others believe Primus sought to extend perfect law and order throughout the entirety of the multiverse. At some point in existence, Primus created a massive stone crafted in complex geometry known as the Spawning Stone and imbued it with the essence of law itself. It then cast it into the plane of Limbo, believing it would cure its chaotic nature and establish some form of order. This act had an effect that was diametrically opposed to Primus' original intent: it led to the creation of the slaadi race. Primus, seeking to counteract the creation of this new chaotic race, began the creation of the Modrons, constructs sent to Limbo in the hope to defeat the slaadi. However, his new creation suffered a similar fate as his previous and over time were twisted by the chaotic nature of the plane. They began to devise new nonsensical laws and hierarchies within their ranks that Primus despised. With the help of Ioun he was later able to create the Inexorables, incorruptible forces of law that purge chaos across the multiverse. Mechanus does not manage religions or cults of his own, but is worshipped as a diety by the Mordrons and held in supremely high regard by the Fraternity of Order.“Quote? You desire a quote? The One and the Prime does not give 'quotes'.”
— Primus to a record keeper of the Fraternity of Order
Selûne
Our Lady of Silver, the Moonmaiden, and She Who Guides, is the goddess of the moon. Selûne is believed to be one of the oldest deities. Many legends are told about her, the central one being her conflict with her sister Shar at the beginning of all things. Her eternal enemy is her sister Shar, goddess of the night, a war that had been waged since before all other gods existed, before time was recorded. They fought constantly in all realms of existence, across the sky at night and in other planes, waged through their mortal followers and their servitor beings, and in person. Selûne labors always to thwart Shar's dark plots. Among her other foes is Mask, for the mischief and wickedness he made in the shadows formed by her moon's light at night. Selûne has a working relationship with Lathander, both attempting to oppose Shar and her schemes.“Let all on whom my light falls be welcome if they desire to be so. As the silver moon waxes and wanes, so too does all life. Trust in my radiance, and know that all love alive under my light shall know my blessing. Turn to the moon, and I will be your true guide.”
— The words of Selune, which all novices were charged with.
Mask
A loner god most often associated with those of ill-repute. The Lord of Shadows is a chaotic neutral or neutral evil deity symbolized with a velvet black mask tainted with red. Similar to their god his worshippers do not often form organized religions. His symbol is often used as a part of thieves' cant to denote an organization or person of considerable skill in thievery. All guardians of light, knowledge, and duty are opposed to him. This included Selûne, whose light seeks to reveal his own faithful whilst they worked.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
