Jousting/Mounted Lance Polearm Warfare
The following is a sort of minigame that can be used to simulate a sporting joust and or sustained mounted dog fighting. It is taken directly from appendix C of "Chainmail: rules for medieval miniatures 2nd edition"gary gygax and jeff perren; guidon games.
Suggested use requires at least one 6 sided die and one 8 sided die with option for two 6 sided and two 8 sided.
A player may choose both thier aim point and defensive posistioning while rolling the d6 for opponents defensive posistion and d8 for the opponents aim point, or roll multiple dice to determine all actors actions. Once actions are commited, use the table to determine the results.
Aim point legend: H=Head UR=shield upper right UC=shield upper center UL=shield upper left LR=lower right LC=lower center LL=lower left B=base;the bottom section of the shield not supported by the users arm
Defensive Posistions: 1.Lower Helm 2.Lean R 3.Lean L 4.Steady Seat 5.Shield High 6.Shield Low
1. H= M M M H U M
2. UR= U B M B B M
3. UC= B+U+I U G B B+U U+I
4. UL= G M B G G U
5. LR= B B+U M B M B
6. LC= B+U G B B+U B+U+I B
7. LL= G M B+U G G G
8. B= B G U B B+U+I B
Results legend: B=break lance (sport) or damage weapon (battle)* G=glancing hit, weapon and target undamaged H=helm removal/headshot(lethal) I=injury M=miss U=unhorsed/dismounted(ends joust and initiate normal combat with mounted actor gainging advantage on attacks)
Presence of a "+" in results signifies multiple results occuring simoultaneously
*In sport, lances are generally designed to be less than lethal and break relatively easily and are replaced each ride. In combat, the durability of your weapon will suffer and eventually break when taking repeated damage (i.e. a generic wooden spear has 5HP and could sustain 5 instances of damage before breaking). Once a polearm is broken, the weilder may continue the joust with thier arming weapon, but must always take defensive posistion #4 if they wish to attempt to deal an offensive action on the given ride.
