Kargat

The Kargat are the dreaded secret police of Darkon, a shadowy and ruthless force serving the will of the domain’s mysterious rulers. Composed primarily of vampires and other supernatural agents, the Kargat operate in the darkest corners of the land, weaving webs of surveillance, manipulation, and terror to root out dissent and enforce the tyrants’ iron grip.

The Kargat are known for their stealth, cunning, and cold efficiency. Their ranks include not only vampires—whose immortal patience and predatory instincts make them perfect spies and interrogators—but also warlocks, shadowy witches, and other gifted individuals attuned to subtle magics of concealment and coercion.

Each member is selected for a combination of loyalty, ruthlessness, and arcane aptitude, making the Kargat a force few dare to oppose openly. They move through cities and villages like ghosts, gathering secrets and crushing rebellion before it can bloom.

The Kargat serve many functions:

  • Surveillance: Maintaining a vast network of informants, magical scrying, and whispered rumors.
  • Interrogation: Using both subtle threats and brutal methods to extract confessions and uncover plots.
  • Enforcement: Silencing enemies of the regime through disappearances, public executions, or magical curses.
  • Political Manipulation: Influencing noble courts, sowing distrust, and steering decisions to favor Darkon’s rulers.

Their presence is often invisible until it is too late, and entire communities have been shattered overnight by their intervention.

Members of the Kargat rarely reveal their allegiance openly. When they do, it is often marked by a black raven sigil or a ring set with onyx—a silent emblem of their watchful gaze and deadly reach. Their very name, whispered in fear, means “scourge” or “plague” in the old tongue, a reminder that they bring ruin to those who defy them.

Among Darkon’s populace, the Kargat inspire a mixture of terror, loathing, and resigned acceptance. To speak against them is to invite swift retribution; to suspect them is to live in constant fear. Even nobles and power brokers tread carefully, knowing that the Kargat’s eyes and ears may be closer than they imagine.

The Kargat embody the dark heart of Darkon’s oppressive regime—a supernatural web of spies and enforcers whose loyalty is absolute and whose cruelty is boundless. In the domains where darkness never truly lifts, the Kargat are the ever-present reminder that some shadows are not cast by light, but by fear itself.
