Circle of Eight

The Circle of Eight is a clandestine alliance of some of the most powerful and influential arcane minds in the world. Their true purpose is not to dominate, liberate, or rule, but to ensure that no single power—be it political, divine, or arcane—gains overwhelming influence. In a world prone to cycles of conquest, catastrophe, and revolution, the Circle exists to maintain balance and prevent extremes, often through subtlety and manipulation rather than open intervention.

Founded by the enigmatic archmage Mordenkainen, the Circle operates from the shadows. Its members act independently across various regions, yet remain in constant coordination, united by a shared commitment to the preservation of balance. They keep a careful eye on world events, great rulers, rising powers, and shifting alliances. When necessary, they act to tip the scales back toward equilibrium, whether that means aiding a fledgling kingdom, undermining a growing empire, or quietly eliminating a dangerous threat.

Although the Circle guards its membership closely, several of its members are known by name and reputation:

  • Mordenkainen, the founder and philosophical anchor of the Circle, is a reserved and calculating figure. He has spent his life walking the line between light and darkness, driven by a vision of a world where no single force becomes so dominant that it threatens freedom or stability.
  • Bigby, once a loyal protégé of Mordenkainen, is known for his mastery of conjured forces and tactical precision. Practical and grounded, he is both a formidable scholar and a battle-tested wizard.
  • Jallarzi Sallavarian, a rising star among the magical elite, brings youth, grace, and a keen political mind to the Circle. Her influence reaches into the courts and councils of noble society, making her an effective diplomat as well as a powerful spellcaster.
  • Otiluke, a methodical and disciplined thinker, is best known for his studies of protective and elemental forces. A strategist at heart, he favors containment and control over brute force.
  • Otto, a master of enchantment, is the most eccentric among them. Jovial, indulgent, and brilliant, he has a deep understanding of how music, magic, and emotion intertwine. He sees influence not just in spells, but in subtleties of mood, charm, and persuasion.

Though their methods vary, each member brings a unique perspective and area of expertise to the Circle. Some are reclusive scholars; others are deeply involved in the politics of the world. Some act openly, while others are mere rumors or whispers in ancient texts. The Circle’s strength lies not only in their individual power, but in their shared vision: a world that avoids the devastation of extremes, preserved through vigilance, wisdom, and quiet intervention.

Their presence is rarely acknowledged, yet their influence is far-reaching. Whether behind the fall of a tyrant, the sudden rise of a forgotten heir, or the thwarting of a doomsday cult, the hand of the Circle is often suspected—though seldom proven.
