Chakyik
The Chakyik and Wegwiur peoples—known more commonly to outsiders as the Tiger Nomads and Wolf Nomads—are powerful, independent clans of Baklunish horse nomads who dominate the open steppe lands north of the Yatil Mountains and Lake Quag. Though culturally related and sharing common ancestral roots, the two peoples are distinct in leadership, customs, and political behavior. Both are heirs to a nomadic tradition that prizes strength, freedom, and loyalty to the clan above all else.
The Chakyik, or Tiger Nomads, are fierce, warlike riders renowned for their aggression and martial skill. Their name comes from the tiger pelts many warriors wear, and the beast is a sacred symbol of courage and ferocity in their culture. They are politically centralized, ruled by a Khagan (Great Khan) who commands loyalty through strength, conquest, and divine favor. Tribal chieftains swear fealty to the Khagan, though their allegiance can shift if the ruler shows weakness.
- Government and Leadership: The Khaganate is semi-hereditary, with succession often decided by power struggles among noble clans. The strongest warlord is expected to rise and assert dominance. The ruling family is seen as semi-divine, believed to be favored by the spirits of sky and storm.
- Military and Diplomacy: The Chakyik maintain a highly mobile and aggressive military, based on fast cavalry and mounted archers. They regularly raid their southern and eastern neighbors, including the Paynims and regions of the Flanaess. However, they are also capable of diplomacy when it serves their interests, forming shifting alliances with other steppe clans or foreign powers.
- Society and Culture: Chakyik society is stratified, with warrior nobles at the top, followed by herders, craftsmen, and servants. Women may hold positions of power, especially within tribal councils and the priesthood. Their culture emphasizes glory in battle, personal honor, and respect for ancestral spirits.
Public Agenda
Though often viewed as “barbarians” by city-dwellers, the Chakyik and Wegwiur are sophisticated political actors within their own cultural frameworks. They engage in diplomacy, trade, espionage, and calculated warfare. Their shifting loyalties, internal rivalries, and external raids influence regional balance from the Baklunish West to the northern frontiers of the Flanaess.
They are not empire builders, but neither are they mere marauders. The steppes they roam are theirs by right and tradition, and anyone who seeks to tame or ignore them does so at their peril.
History
Both the Chakyik and Wegwiur:
- Trace their origins to the Baklunish Empire, retaining ancient customs, language, and spiritual practices.
- Live as semi-nomadic herders and raiders, following seasonal migrations and tending herds of horses, sheep, and cattle.
- Resist external domination fiercely, valuing autonomy and clan loyalty above any foreign alliance or ideology.
- Pose a constant strategic challenge to their neighbors, especially the western nations of the Flanaess, due to their mobility, unpredictability, and martial skill.
