Godhood

Godhood is a state of near omnipotence and near immortality. While gods have existed outside of the Prime Material Plane prior to the founding of Divostra, on Divostra gods can be created by the Thaumic Weave, the name given to the magic that flows through the plane. Gods can be created in several ways:
  • Outer Gods (Primordial: Namenchyreon, lit. 'true gods') can arrive on Divostra from other planes. The Primordial Titans are the most notable example of this, having discovered Divostra in its nascent state and utilizing the Thaumic Weave to craft reality from nothingness. Other examples include Ahriman who rules the lower plane of the Nine Hells, or Valtyr who rules the higher plane of Shin'anunar.
  • Old Gods (Primordial: Zhachyreon, lit. 'first gods') are anthropomorphizations of natural concepts created through the collective will of mortal beings. Their power is tied to how strongly the collective unconscious feels about a given phenomena. Greater Gods wield absolute power over the forces of nature they represent with worshippers spanning the entire plane. These gods ascend to become members of the Prime Pantheon and rule over their own planes on the higher or lower ends of the cosmologic map. Kai'ossh is the oldest example of a greater god, being born from the mortal fear of darkness that lurks in the back of every mind. Other gods of this ilk include Thanáta, the matron of death.
  • Ascended Gods (Primordial: Kitachyreon, lit. 'lesser gods') are mortal beings who have been deified. Through acts of great heroism or terrible evil, legends will spread among the population of singular individuals who embody the best and worst qualities of mortal races. These legends flood the collective unconscious to the point that the Thaumic Weave enmeshes itself with the essence of these individuals who then, in a period of great trauma or tremendous need, subconsciously tap into the deific potential of every soul. These beings become a Thaumic Locus and ascend to godhood, attaining immortality and omnipotence. Their names are lost to time, replaced by the names bestowed upon them by legends told about them. The patron deities of most modern religions are created this way, representing ethical or emotional ideals rather than inherent natural forces personified.
  • Mortals of strong will and intelligence can attempt to tap into the power of the Thaumic Weave, though without the buffer of a collective unconscious creating a locus, the results can be chaotic. This has only been attempted once by Petrarch Vitroni and led to the cataclysmic Sundering that nearly destroyed the Prime Material Plane.

The gods of Divostra are immortal in the sense that should the god fall or cease to be, the collective belief that first brought them into existence will reform them in time. This is why the Primordial Titans imprisoned Tharizdun and why Moradin banished Tiamat to the Nine Hells; were these gods slain in battle, they would have simply reformed thanks to the collective unconscious of all the mortal beings in Divostra, though not necessarily in the same form.

While nearly omnipotent, the gods of Divostra are not omniscient. Old Gods can extend their influence in such a way as to resemble omniscience, but most gods can be deceived and can have their vision obscured through arcane or celestial means. The ascended gods in particular still feel the emotions and morality of their former lives; often it is these emotions or moral codes that led to their godhood in the first place.
