The Hawk and the Fox

As they had agreed, they met at opposite edges of the Serene Pool when the sun was highest in the sky. They did not bandy words, for they had already been spoken.

The Hawk simply drew her blade, forged from sunlight by the Raging Embers, yet burning only half as hot as her rage at the Turtle's rebuff. She mantled the power of her goddess and teacher, the Noonday Sun, and stepped into the pool. Water boiled as her flesh approached, sending up a plume of steam high into the air.

The Fox, still not sure why the Hawk was so angry with him, mantled the power of the Northern River . He may have wanted the Hawk to simply let this fight go, but he knew that she would not. Combat was all she seemed to understand, after all.

He stepped forward, his foot standing firm on the water as sure as if it was a tile. Frost spidered it's fingers across the surface, and his wooden shoes clacked against the ice with each step.
— Red Hawk White Fox, section 4 (translated)

A myth told in many variations across the various Oni cultures, it is a long-running tale of two individuals who are born into two different sections of Oni society, but are forced together when a mutual acquaintance is murdered. While they regularly but heads throughout the story, it is a love story in the long run.
