The Grave's Ranting

Words Out of the Grave

The Grave's Ranting is an annual holiday where those that have died since the previous year's ranting have their souls magically reunited with their bodies to become ranters for twenty-four hours. Their families and friends sit and listen to them tell stories of their life. It is a moment where a dead person may resolve secrets they had never meant to take to the grave.

Once a raised ranter has said all they wish, they may return to their grave and separate their body from their soul once again. After which, a ranter cannot be raised this way again and ranters may only be raised up to one year after dying. This is said to be because Kyros will only allow his new servants time for freedom before ensuring they return to their endless work.

History

The Followers of Kyros began this annual ritual in what was once called the Graverending. This ancient ritual was a test of a daughter's strength and connection to Kyros: to prove this, she would raise as many revanents in one night as she possibly could. These revanents were granted the ability to perform revenge against those that wronged them in a single life for fourty-eight hours, at the end of which, they returned their soul to Kyros as their ever-eternal master and their body to the daughter as an undead thrall to protect her from any vengeance blamed upon her.

Following the founding of The Kyros Academy, the city of Istos outlawed the tradition. Master Doulem Green decried the Graverending as "An archaic practice which denies Kyros's right to all souls and a man's right to the bodies of those he kills." Despite this, cultists to "Old Kyros" continued to practice the tradition in secret nooks of the Argos forest and on ranches unwatched by their landowners. The draugr thralls of farms would be reunited with their soul, and enraged by their treatment, slave revolts became an annual fourty-eight hour nightmare for the city.

When Veimos became nomarch of the city, he decided to end this nuisance through diplomatic means. He brought the tradition back in its modern form, and he ensured that those who were caught raising revenants were sent to the Iron Catacombs to "Suffer with the free undead they seemed to love so much." The city fell in line, but many of the young students of The Kyros Academy still make comments to one another about how the Grave's Ranting is a fake holiday which has lost its "true" meaning.

Participants

The Penestae and the School of Necromancy at The Kyros Academy compete with one another to raise the best stories from their ranters. Students and individual penitents may also compete with one another. The nomarch judges the stories from each party and decides on a winner for that year's ranting. Whichever organization wins is granted the artifact known as Kyros's Revanancer.

Observance

The Grave's Ranting is an annual holiday which takes place on the last pair of full moons in the month of Panlun. The ritual is started at midnight of the first full moon and ended at the midnight of the second full moon.

Skalding Truths

Ranters are unable to harm the living. This can lead to scenes of horror as those who want to keep the dead silenced destroy the undead once again before secrets are revealed. Sometimes, the raised dead are missing their fingers or their vocal cords, raised to a terrifying fate: being unable to speak or write to anyone in their last hours on Divim. Still others are forced to magically put on an act, realizing that the person who raised them has magically ensured they are incapable of speaking freely. These ranters suffer while others laugh at their nonsensical stories.
