The Red Riders

Gangs of highwaymen are an ever-present danger on the roads of the Boomlands, but most gangs are small, poorly-organized, and temporary. If they don't tear themselves apart with infighting and power struggles, they eventually meet their end at the hands of a vigilante posse, the RRV, or a bigger gang. The Red Riders are the exception. They've been terrorizing the highways for nearly a decade, strike with planning and precision, and are estimated to have at least a hundred members.   The Red Riders mainly operate in southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas from what's left of Route 66 to Lake Mojave and the Rio Grande to the south. They can and do prey on convoys and camps in other areas--especially Utah and Neavada--but these raids tend to be targeted at specific cargos or resources. They shy away from the roads under heavy RRV protection, but will conduct raids there if the prize is big enough to justify the risk. There have only ever been 3 successful attacks on RRV convoys, and most people believe the Red Riders were responsible for all three.   The Red Riders get their name from their command vehicles: souped-up muscle cars with red paintjobs that are kept in as pristine of a condition as the Boomlands allows. These cars stay well ahead of the main convoy and serve as a warning to anyone on the roads who isn't an intended target that they should probably find somewhere else to be. If the Riders are attempting to overtake a moving convoy or attacking a stationary objective, the lead car will pull back as they near the target so as not to raise the alarm. This doesn't happen very often however, because the Riders specialize in ambushing their victims.   When conducting raids or otherwise openly identifying themselves as gang members, Red Riders cover their faces, usually opting for Old West train robber tradition of wearing bandanas--preferably red--but sometimes wearing ski masks, gas masks, tinted-glass helmets, or other gear. The only member who regularly bares his face when "working" is the gang's leader Clyde "Rowdy" Dalton. In addition to their masks, some members wear jackets painted with a red skull and crossbones captioned with the group's motto: "Strength. Speed. Survival."   The group is believed to be headquartered somewhere between the Las Vegas and Flagstaff hot zones, but their hideout has never been discovered. The gang knows the territory well enough to lose most pursuers, and those who can keep up inevitably run into a heavily-armed contingent of the home guard. Even in the unlikely event of the pursuers winning the fight, the convoy they were chasing is long gone by the time it's over. One Boomlands legend claims that the gang is based in a cave system somewhere deep within the Grand Canyon that isn't affected by the surrounding fallout due to depth, engineering, or some combination of geological physics and weather conditions that directs the fallout away from the hideout.

Structure

The Red Riders travel is squads of around 20 bandits, but will band together in larger numbers when going after a bigger prize. A typical raiding party consists of 6 or 7 vehicles, each with a specific role:
  • 2 Scouts: The scouts ride motorcycles and travel in front of the pack to keep an eye out for road hazards, potential opposition, and other trouble. They are unarmed except for the rider's personal weapons and neither the bikes nor their riders bear any gang markings.
  • The Color Guard: This is the distinctive red muscle car that lets people know the Riders have business. These cars are built for speed, not combat, and during an ambush or raid they move to an observation point that keeps them in view of the operation but out of the bullets. The leader of the squad drives or rides shotgun in this vehicle with a trusted lieutenant in the other position. A third gang member who acts as navigator, radio operator, and general aide-de-camp, occupies the back seat.
  • The Tank: The tank is a semi tractor that's been heavily armored and fitted with a shielded firing platform atop the cab housing the squad's biggest, baddest weapon--usually a machine gun. Most have ram or cow-catcher of some sort attached to the front. The tank positions itself as the biggest threat in combat, laying down heavy fire and taking out barricades, enemy vehicles, and anyone dumb enough to get in its way. When the fight's over, the tank usually ends up hooked to a trailer whose truck didn't survive the battle or towing one or more cargo vehicles that can no longer move under its own power. The tank is crewed by a driver, 3 gunners (one riding shotgun and two up top), and a mechanic who takes care of repairs and figures out how to haul as much of the loot as possible back to base.
  • 2-3 Gunboats: These are jeeps, trucks, or convertibles designed to offer a decent mix of speed and firepower. They act as skirmishers and attempt to corral the enemy's movements. Depending on the vehicle and mounted weaponry (ideally each gunboat has a machine gun or other heavy weapon), they can carry anywhere for 3-6 gunners in addition to the driver. Those who aren't manning the built-in weapons use rifles or shotguns, and all are armed and ready to exit the vehicle for hand-to-hand combat if needed. Most are armored and fitted with rams, parapets, wenches, and other useful gadgets.
Outside of their raiding party structure and Rowdy Dalton's place at the top of the heap, little is known about the Red Rider's organization or command structure, but whatever they're doing seems to work.
