Can you imagine what it would be like to hold the gods up as more than they are? As impervious, infallible, beings that not only deserve your worship and your oblations, but require them of you?

I am glad that such thoughts are relegated to history books and theological discussion.

After all, many of the gods that I know are greedy, bloody-soaked mercenaries. I don't even like paying them the money they're owed for their services. I know a Goddess that has not moved from her chair in fifty years, studying one single book. Her notes on it could crush a man to paste.
