Swords of Breland
To some, the Swords of Breland are the last hope for the future of Brelish democracy; to others, they're a terrorist organization bent on tearing down the Brelish crown. The Swords of Breland began as a peasant-army, draftees pressed into service as the King's Citadel began to run thin of forces near the end of the Last War. In 983, King Boranel promised the Swords of Breland that if the country survived the war, he would be their last king and turn over responsibility of the government to the parliament that had been formed only a decade before.
However, Boranel then spent almost all of his political capital championing the rights of the forged, culminating in 986 with the passage of the Warforged Treaty of Breland. During the signing of the Warforged Treaty, King Boranel remarked to Prime Minister ir'Clarn Ruken that "change will come only as fast as the people will bear." To many within the Swords of Liberty, this comment was seen as a reneging of his earlier promise. The king's lack of further commitment to the cause, coupled with his seemingly endless "missions of understanding" on the subject, have pushed some within the Swords of Liberty to take the question of Breland's future government into their own hands. These zealots have largely succeeded in radicalizing this peasant-army against the crown, and their actions have gotten bolder by the day as a result.
A few reporters at the Breland Ledger have noticed that the Swords of Liberty are unusually well-equipped for a rag-tag band of freedom fighters, and have begun investigating their supply lines. The King's Lanterns have also sent agents undercover within the organization, in hopes of stopping a civil war before it begins.
