Slow Burns

Slow burns, alternatively referred to as demonite burns, occur when individuals are exposed to the formidable and sinister energy emanating from the enigmatic mineral known as demonite for an extended period of time, resulting in severe injuries. These burns occur when individuals come into contact with or remain in the vicinity of demonite deposits for extended periods of time.   Demonite releases diabolical energy that is harmful to living organisms. Over time, this energy causes damage to body tissues, resulting in the gradual onset of slow burns. The effects are insidious, as symptoms may not appear immediately but may take days or even weeks after exposure.   Individuals suffering from slow burns initially experience a subtle reddening of the skin, accompanied by a lingering sensation of warmth in the affected area. As the condition progresses, the skin may develop blistering and ulceration, similar to severe burns. The burns can be extremely painful, and the affected area may give off an eerie, faint glow owing to the lingering traces of Demonite energy.   Severe Demonite burns can lead to extensive tissue damage, impacting not just the surface of the skin, but also the underlying muscles and even the bones themselves. Severe exposure to the corrupting power of demonite can lead to a dreadful condition where the affected tissue suffers from necrosis. In such grave scenarios, surgery is inevitable to save the rest of the body from malignant energy. In the worst cases, amputation is the only solution to prevent the spread of this detrimental force.   Miners must exercise caution and remain vigilant when working in areas where demonite deposits are present, as even brief exposures can have lasting effects.   In summary, slow burns are the result of exposure to corrupting energies emitted by this malevolent mineral. These burns have a gradual onset and cause skin damage and tissue destruction over time.

Causes

Slow burns can only be acquired through close contact with Demonite. The injuries mentioned are a direct consequence of coming into close contact with the malevolent ore. They are primarily acquired by unsuspecting miners who unknowingly encounter fragments of this hazardous substance.

Symptoms

The progression of the Slow Burns caused by exposure to demonite is undeniably frightful. Initially, the skin in the affected area turns red, accompanied by noticeable warmth that mimics the sensation of a minor burn. Over time, the area progressively deteriorates, resulting in the development of blisters and open sores that closely resemble the appearance and progression of severe burns. This process causes considerable discomfort and distress, underscoring the insidious and damaging nature of demonite’s influence on the body. Painful resemblance to actual burns adds an extra layer of urgency to avoid prolonged contact with this dangerous substance.

Treatment

The added complexity of the resistance of Demonite Burns to both conventional and magical treatments significantly intensifies the grave risks associated with this malevolent ore. Attempts to mitigate the damage caused by demonite burns through medical intervention prove to be incredibly challenging, if not futile.   The seemingly simple method of using new skin to cover and replace damaged tissue is not as easy as it appears. Although there may be some hope for healing with this method, the harsh truth remains that the body is equally likely to reject the transplanted skin, or even worse, it may suffer from the same burning effects as the damaged tissue. The malevolence of demonite appears to persist, even in the realm of medical treatment, defying the efforts of both mundane and magical interventions.   To effectively address the complexities presented by the distinctive characteristics of demonite burns, the optimal course of action for treating slow burns resulting from exposure to demonite is to alleviate discomfort and avert potential infections. Because Demonite burns are resistant to both mundane and magical healing techniques, the main goal is to ease discomfort and alleviate pain, thus enabling the body to naturally undergo the healing process.   The recommended treatment for slow burns is to keep the affected areas clean and dry. This can help prevent secondary infections, which can complicate the healing process. Applying gentle, non-irritating salves or dressings may provide some relief, although care should be taken to avoid aggravating the condition. Pain management measures, such as the use of herbal remedies or mild analgesics, may also alleviate the discomfort associated with demonite burns.   Given the unpredictable nature of demonite burns and their resistance to conventional treatments, the primary focus of care is supportive. Despite the challenges posed by malevolent ore, demonite burn victims can anticipate a smoother recovery through the provision of a clean and optimal environment that facilitates the body's natural healing processes.

Prognosis

Demonite burns can cause varying degrees of damage, ranging from minor burns that result in permanent scars to more severe burns that can potentially be life threatening. Although minor burns from demonite may not pose an immediate threat to life, they can inflict lasting scars that become a haunting testament to one's encounter with this ominous substance. The scars left behind by these burns can cause chronic pain or limited mobility depending on their location.   At the other end of the spectrum, severe demonite burns pose far greater danger. These burns can leave victims vulnerable to life-threatening complications. The combination of the nature of the burns and the malignant qualities of demonite poses a dangerous threat, capable of causing infections, dehydration, and other severe medical complications. Timely and appropriate medical care is crucial in cases of severe demonite burns as the body's ability to heal and recover is compromised, increasing the risk of complications.

Prevention

The most reliable way to prevent slow burns caused by demonite is to avoid direct contact with ore. Ensuring the safety of miners and individuals working in close proximity to demonite is crucial, because of the malicious characteristics of the ore and its potential to inflict long-term harm through continuous exposure.   Miners and others working in mining operations must be well informed about the appearance and characteristics of demonite to recognize it and exercise caution. Proper training, safety protocols, and protective equipment can help reduce the risk of inadvertent handling of Demonite chunks and slow burns.

Epidemiology

Slow burns are not transmissible. However, when dealing with the slow burns caused by demonite, the risk of transmitting these effects to others can be reduced by taking precautions. To ensure their safety, individuals who come into contact with Demonite and suffer from slow burns should be extra cautious and make sure to thoroughly cleanse themselves, including taking a refreshing bath, to completely eliminate any remnants of the ore on their skin. In addition, it is important to dispose of any clothing worn during contact with demonite to prevent residual traces from potentially harming others.

The Chronicler's Insights

(Except from the Demonite entry)   Merely holding a piece of Demonite doesn't exacerbate the sickness, but it exacts its own torment. Picture yourself as a miner, unknowingly clutching a fragment for a few minutes. By the next morning, your hand would throb with tenderness and sport a fiery red hue, as if you'd scalded it on a searing skillet. In the ensuing days, the redness intensifies, accompanied by swelling. A couple of weeks later, the outer layer of your hand takes on an ashen appearance and flakes away. After a few months, your fingers turn pallid and cease to respond, lifeless but still attached. In the following months, they gradually disintegrate, leaving you with nothing but a stump of an arm, a stark testament to the relentless "slow burn" inflicted by Demonite.
