Southport Thieves' Guild
In the city of Southport in Sudland and the surrounding villages, rogues, thieves, pickpockets, con artists, and various other ruffians and ne'er-do-wells have formed a loose and informal association that most people call the Thieves' Guild.
The informal leader of the Thieves' Guild is Dorrie Lightfoot Paine. As one of the most successful and most intelligent thieves in Southport, she is acknowledged by nearly all of the Southport underworld as their leader. She settles disputes (or tries to) between members of the underworld and sometimes arranges for members of the Thieves' Guild to cooperate in larger heists.
The Southport Thieves' Guild exists to ensure that crime doesn't get too violent or so blatant that the authorities in Southport are forced to take more notice than usual and crackdown on criminal activity beyond the norm. Thieves, pickpockets, and the like that cause trouble that might lead to a crackdown are "reminded" - violently, if necessary - not to bring attention to the guild.
Structure
The Thieves' Guild does not have a formal structure, just some members that are considered more prominent, powerful, or influential than others. Dorrie Lightfoot Paine is the informal, but almost universally acknowledged leader.
Culture
The members of the Thieves' Guild favor stealth and slight-of-hand to steal the things they want, and steal primarily to support themselves and sometimes for thrills. They avoid confrontation and violence as much as possible, but they will fight to escape arrest or to defend themselves. Many are relatively formidable fighters, but they usually are not formally trained warriors or soldiers. They are not assassins, and never kill their victims if it is at all avoidable. They consider a confrontation or fight during a theft to be a failure and a disgrace. They much prefer their victims to be completely unaware that they've been robbed until the thief has long departed the scene.
Assets
The Thieves' Guild does not have any assets aside from those of the individual members.
History
For nearly as long as Southport has been a city of significant size, the Thieves' Guild has been a part of the city's underworld culture. Its importance and influence has waxed and waned over the years, depending on the influence of its leaders and the diligence of law enforcement, but it has never disappeared entirely.
You Make It. We Take It.
