Nødyeband
The Nødyeband is the traditional formal dress worn by women and girls of Nodyund and Danyund. The Nødyeband consists of a tight-fitting, long skirt of fine wool, with a linen or cotton, long-sleeved shirt, usually of white, and a long apron covering the skirt and the shirt. A colorful, sleeveless, embroidered, woolen shawl or short jacket is worn over the top of the apron.
Nødyeband dresses are made of the highest quality materials - wool, linen, cotton, and sometimes silk - and are covered with highly detailed, intricate embroidery, especially on the shawl and lower hem of the skirt.. They are worn with custom-made silver and gold clasps and other jewelry, occasionally including precious stones. Because of this, Nødyeband are very expensive, and are a sign of wealth and nobility. Commoner girls and women typically cannot afford a complete, traditional Nødyeband, but their more formal clothes are modeled after the Nødyeband; though, they are made with less expensive, lower quality materials and have less embroidery and clasps made of wood or carved bone, rather than silver or gold.
There are many different styles of Nødyeband; each region and town having its own variation with different colors, embroidery patterns, and cut of the skirt, shirt, apron, and shawl. Often, the skirt is dark blue or black, but many other colors are used. The shirt and apron are often white. The shawl or jacket typically matches the skirt, but is usually highly decorated with embroidery and jewelry. Nødyeband in Nodyund are quite different than those from Danyund; typically being more traditional and conservative in style, with less embroidery but favoring more color.
Manufacturing process
Seamstresses in Nodyund and Danyund measure the person that is being fitted for the Nødyeband, then modify the traditional patterns according to the measurements. After that, the skirt, shirt, apron, and shawl or jacket are hand-sewn, embroidered, and finally, clasps or buttons added. The entire process for making the Nødyeband can take several months.
