Trench Lung

Trench Lung is not infectious and can only be transmitted from a lung transplant.

Trench Lung is acquired when a humanoid is at too deep of a depth in the ocean and comes into contact with the dark waters below.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, Difficulty breathing, Dizzyness, fatigue, Coughing up water, Unconsciousness, and death.

While there is no cure, Hot baths, saunas, and warm foods/drinks slow the spread sometimes long enough for those afflicted to live long plentiful lives.

Afflicted at first will experience a small feeling of cold within their chest that turns into a chilled cough. Not long after the coughing begins, A dark blue mark appears on the right side of the chest with small spindles on the edges. As Trench Lung progresses, the spindles spread throughout the body and do not recede no matter the treatment. Soon afterwards, the coughing begins bringing water from the lungs and the afflicted never seems to be able to catch their breath. This causes dizziness and sometimes unconsciousness. The final stage only comes after the afflicted has fallen unconscious, death by drowning. Cold water begins to flood the lungs once Trench Lung has advanced far enough causing the afflicted to fall unconscious and drown.

With Depth protection from magic enchantments or heavy equipment, one can venture deep into the oceans darkness, However should the protection fail, one should be checked immediately before it is too late.   If treated with magic or snorting ground bamboo dust before the mark appears on the afflicted ones chest, Trench lung can be cured.

Trench lung was first recorded in elven mages who would venture into the oceans depth to uncover the secrets in its dark recesses by using magical enchantments, But some enchantments could not hold under the pressure and cracked which gave way to elves researching it and discovering early treatment through magic to prevent it. It was discovered that dragon born had also separately discovered Trench Lung by venturing into the depths while riding water dragons and drakes, But also discovered that early treatment through ground bamboo would prevent it.

People who have contracted Trench Lung and are marked, are looked upon with pity, as everyone knows its only a matter of time before the cold death reaches them.
