Sage
The rank of Sage is a the second highest position in the sorgina society. The only rank above them are the eight Arch Masters that rule the sorgina. Most of the Sages live in Naofe in the main temple with the Arch Masters, attending the temple and the Arch Masters, taking care of everything necessary. In some cases they get send out to other places as direct extensions of the power of the Arch Masters. They also teach younger sorgina students at the academy on both magic and religious rites and texts.
To become a Sage, one does not only have to have a high magic potential and knowledge, but also unquestionable religious devotion. Nobody that does not fully believe in the Faith of the Eight would ever be in such a position. Also, all of the Sages have attended the academy in Naofe, receiving the best possible education on their magic and on religious rules, texts and rites.
The Sages are being payed well for their work in the temple and their political work. This money comes from global taxes. Furthermore, they are extremely respected among the society and often get small gifts from very religiously devoted people.
Usually, each of the eight Arch Masters has eight Sages under them. So there are 64 Sages living in the main temple in Naofe. So they are considered a somewhat exclusive group. The Sages get selected by the Arch Masters personally. New ones are chosen when a Sage dies or commits a crime bad enough to be banished from the sorgina society. When one of the Arch Masters passes away, their successor is chosen from the Sages. There is an underlying competition constantly going on between the Sages as they attend the Holy Congregation because everyone wants to make themselves out to be the best option for succession.
