Dawn of Others Primer

Dawn of Others is a post-apocalyptic world where humanity grapples with the aftermath of a devastating viral outbreak. The collapse of civilization, known as The Fall, began with a sudden outbreak in Seattle, leading to widespread chaos and the eventual downfall of global infrastructure. The virus, Sonohoka Syndrome, has multiple strains:

  • Strain A: Ubiquitous among survivors, it causes no symptoms but is believed to be the source of Vigor, a form of magical energy.
  • Strains B, C, and D: More aggressive, these strains often result in zombification. However, a rare few (approximately 5%) infected individuals become Others—mutated beings who retain their cognitive abilities but are physically altered.

Zombies in this world are not mindless creatures; they exhibit social structures akin to primate troops, with complex hierarchies and behaviors. They live in groups ranging from 15 to 150 individuals, with females forming the core of the social system. Zombies are omnivorous, foraging and hunting in groups, and display rudimentary intelligence, such as using basic tools and forming protective units.

Others, while retaining their human consciousness, undergo significant physical mutations. These mutations can include immunity to fire, heated bodies that cause damage upon contact, and the ability to emit light. The transformation process is arduous, often accompanied by severe exhaustion and the risk of descending into madness. Society views Others with suspicion and fear, leading to their marginalization or persecution.

In the midst of this desolation, Camp Hope emerges as a beacon of structured society. Governed by a High Chairman and four medically trained advisers, the camp focuses on finding a cure for the virus. It comprises various districts, including medical, housing, business, and farming sectors. The camp accepts Others and Awakened individuals, who make up about 25% of its population, but generally prohibits zombies, except under strict research conditions. Camp Hope trades in medicine, cybernetics, and power cells, while importing zombie and Other samples, old technology, meat, hides, and medical books.

The world of Dawn of Others is a complex tapestry of survival, mutation, and the struggle to rebuild amidst the remnants of a fallen civilization.
