Personal history
Mouseki, short for “Mousekiller”, was adopted by a family of farmers from a well-meaning “babushka” at a passing caravan. Mistaken for a strangely shaped kitten, the farmer brought the young catfolk home to his wife as a gift. The young kitten was meant to keep the mice from his wife’s kitchen and home, something she had complained about the morning before he left for the market. Jorra Flores, wife of Farn Flores and mother of their seven sons, was overjoyed when she discovered the little one amongst the basket of treats her husband brought home, and immediately named her Mousekiller, “to solidify her destiny as the farm’s best mouse killer.”
Mousekiller lived up to her name for the next eight weeks. She was fed well by her adopted family and hunted even better. However, it didn’t take long for wise Jorra to realize the new addition wasn’t exactly your typical cat. The first time Mousekiller spoke up and asked for her morning milk, Jorra nearly had a heart attack. The small, brown tabby kitten quickly grew in size and vocabulary. Pretty soon, Jorra had decided Mousekiller needed a new name, and shortened it to Mouseki. Jorra moved Mouseki from the barn and into the house, much to her youngest brother’s displeasure (he now had to share a room).
Over the next several years, Mouseki grew to be a valued member of the family. Her mother insisted she was “no different than your brothers,” but always seemed to skirt around the topic of her birth and any questions as to why she didn’t look like the rest of the family. Her mother always answered such questions with, “you were a gift from the Goddess, and I birthed you from my heart. Now hush and go hunt us up some dinner.” Hunt she did. Mouseki quickly moved from hunting mice in the kitchen and barn to hunting the family’s daily meat. The Flors’ sons were fiercely protective of their strange younger sister, and taught her what they could with the weapons of the farm. Though she favored her claws, her beloved mother insisted it was not “ladylike” to hunt the deer with claws and teeth. “You are to use a weapon like civilized folk. Just because we live on a farm, doesn’t mean we are simple. Take your grandfather’s glaive, child.” Jorra would then shoo her sons and only daughter from the house to hunt and tend the farm.
As Mouseki and her siblings reached adulthood, the prospect of marriage arose. Her eldest brother, Tomfre, married the daughter of their closest neighbor. In quick succession, the next three brothers -- Clarence, Leonard, and Farn Jr. -- found their own wives from the other neighboring farms. Perfin joined the local church [possibly the Cult of Possumundius], while Jax apprenticed to a local Blacksmith and Stern was expected to take over the family farm.
It was after Jax’s apprenticeship was announced that Jorra and Farn drew their only daughter aside and finally told her the story of her adoption.
“You are still the daughter of my heart, youngling, but you are not likely to find a husband here,” her mother said sadly, taking Mouseki’s paws in her hands.
“We would love for you to stay, but --,” Farn stated, wringing his straw hat in his hands.
“I know what I must do, ma and pa. I’ll not stay and be a burden on Stern. We all know he’s smitten over that baker’s daughter. He’ll be married soon too and startin’ his own family,” Mouseki proclaimed.
Eyes gleaming with tears, Jorra pulled her hugged her daughter tightly, “You always did have a wanderer’s heart, sweetpea. Now, there’s no sense in you leaving before Stern marries. You’ll be staying right here until then.”
Before his daughter could protest, Farn pushed his hat on his head and spoke, “your ma’s right. You’ll be staying right where yar til the last boy marries. I’ll not be hearin’ any different. Now, lets get back to the party.” He took his wife and daughter’s hands (and paws) and pulled them back to the crowded barn.
Mouseki was quite right about her brother’s intent. Stern and the baker’s wife were married within the year, and Mouseki left the following spring to explore the outside world.
