Military Ranks in the Legions of the Imperial Reman Republic

Officer Ranks

  Imperator: Supreme Commander of all Reman military forces. This rank is held by the ruler of the Reman Republic or a supreme military leader appointed by them. (Equivalent to Emperor/Supreme General)   Legatus Augusti: Commander of multiple legions, often with provincial governorship. (Slightly higher than historical Legatus Legionis, reflecting increased power)   Legatus Legionis (General): Commander of a single legion.   Tribunus Laticlavius: Second-in-command of a legion, typically a young noble.   Praefectus Castrorum: Camp Prefect; responsible for the legion's logistics, camp, and training.   Tribunus Angusticlavius: A senior officer, often with administrative duties.   First Spear: The most senior centurion of the legion, commanding the first century of the first cohort.   Centurion: Officer commanding a century (roughly 80-100 men). There were various grades of centurion, with the Primus Pilus being the most senior.  

Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Ranks

  Magister Armorum: "Master of Arms". A rank given to a soldier or veteran in charge of training new recruits in combat.   Custodes Aquilae: "Guardians of the Eagle". An elite unit within each legion, responsible for the direct protection of the Aquila.   Vexillarius Primus: The senior-most Vexillarius in a legion, responsible for all the legion's Vexilla (smaller standards).   Optio: Second-in-command to a centurion.   Decanus (Sergeant): Leader of a contubernium, a squad of 8 legionaries. (Equivalent to Sergeant)   Aquilifer: The legion's standard-bearer, carrying the aquila (eagle).   Signifer: Standard-bearer for a century.   Imaginifer: Carries the image of the Imperator.   Tesserarius: Guard commander; responsible for the watch.   Decurion: Commander of a cavalry unit (turma). (Included here for completeness, though legions were primarily infantry)  

Enlisted Ranks

  Evocatus: A veteran soldier who has re-enlisted after completing their service.   Miles: A regular soldier/legionary.   Tiro: A recruit/trainee.
