“It ain’t empty. It ain’t dead. It just don’t belong to the city no more—it belongs to whatever’s wearin’ the skin of laughter and screams in there.”

Description - Exterior

The red brick façade is split with black veins of moss and soot, boarded windows grin like crooked teeth, and the roofline looks ready to collapse in prayer. Iron gates hang off their hinges. Graffiti scrawls over crumbling stone: laughing mouths, eyes with too many pupils, the Maniacs’ jagged crown. Crows perch like gargoyles, watching and silent, until they all erupt at once.

Description - Interior

The air inside tastes like mildew, copper, and burnt incense. Wheelchairs and gurneys sit frozen mid-sprint. Walls are smeared with slogans, Veil glyphs, and something that might be blood or paint—or both. Echoes bounce wrong. The old chapel is their pulpit now, ringed in candles and bone. Somewhere beneath the floorboards, a humming engine pulses with a rhythm like breath—but too slow, too deep.

History

Built in 1906 as a Catholic sanitarium for the mentally ill, St. Mary’s saw decades of overcrowding, abuse, and “experimental” Veil treatments. Shut down in 1939 after a patient-led uprising and a suspicious fire, it stood silent for a decade—until the Maniacs moved in. No one called the city. No one dared.

Owned By

Technically still city property, but no official wants to touch it. Control on the ground belongs to The Maniacs, a feral gang of Veil-touched cultists who treat it as sacred ground. They claim “The Laughing Saint” lives in the basement and feeds on secrets.

Run By

Brother Mouth—the Maniacs’ high priest and frontman. Painted in streaks and sigils, he speaks in rhyme and riddles, and never blinks. Some say his mouth moves even when he sleeps.

Employees

  • Brother Mouth – Charismatic lunatic, worships the Saint Below.
  • “Lobotomy Lou” – Surgeon with rusted tools and no medical training.
  • Nails – Keeps the doors shut and the outsiders bleeding.
  • Giggles – Handles initiation rites and dismemberment with equal cheer.
  • Vow – Silent scribe, tattoos everything in scripture across her own skin.
  • Father Bones – Wandering preacher who speaks in tongues and flame.

Regulars

  • Veil cultists looking to lose themselves or level up.
  • Outcast Strano and arcane thrill-seekers chasing visions.
  • Deal-makers who want power, madness, or both.
  • CPD informants pretending to be converts. Don’t last long.
  • Screaming figures seen only through cracked mirrors.
  • The Laughing Saint—whatever that is. It appears during the black veil rituals.

Notes

  • Veil energy here is raw, unchecked. Spells cast within St. Mary’s often mutate or go sideways.
  • Rival gangs leave offerings at the gate—just in case.
  • Some claim St. Mary’s connects via tunnels to other sites of Veil trauma across the city.
  • An entire third wing of the hospital is physically gone—but appears under Veil sight.
  • The chapel’s altar changes nightly. Sometimes it's bone. Sometimes it breathes.
  • A perfect place for forbidden rites, unhinged bargains, or veiled confrontations gone very wrong.
