The Grave Templars
Introduction
For centuries, the Providence kingdom has been ravaged by wars that scarred the continent, beastmen pillage and torture the populations in the east, Cults corrupt and infiltrate the strongholds of humanity one by one, and internal conflicts continues to divide an already weakened humanity. But of all the threats that humanity must face, there is one that is more terrible than the others, more deadly, more terrifying, even more unspeakable than the creatures of Darkness: The Elder Beings, nightmarish beings with immense psychic powers and an inexhaustible thirst for blood, a threat so absurd that their existence is often hidden or altered by the authorities, because the truth would be too hard for the minds of the population to bear.
Humanity has few defences against these powerful beings, who are extremely adept at manipulating the human psyche and exploiting the smallest hidden weaknesses in anyone. Just one of these creatures is enough to plunge entire villages into madness before sacrificing all the inhabitants in macabre displays, leaving only piles of shapeless flesh and scattered bones that form unknown esoteric sigils, or simply leaving no trace of the victims, as if the place had been frozen in time before the population vanished.
It's a threat so dark that it's unlikely anyone would think they could stand against it, and yet against this terrifying backdrop, an order of knights has established itself as masters at tracking down these nightmarish enemies...
<<In the darkest part of the world, where only the most evil beings gather, our enemies tremble in fear as we march towards them.>>
1) The Grave Templars, the Order of death
The Grave Templars are the spiritual heirs of Aviel, the Apostle of Death, they arewhat remains of an infallible and incorruptible army of warriors who hunt down their enemies even in the darkest part of the world.
They were the second order of chivalry in the human realm, founded by Lord Aviel to serve a morbid purpose. While their brothers in the other Orders fought in the light, bringing a somewhat hope to the citizens and acting as guardians of the borders of the human realm, the Templars are fighters in the shadows, acting where evil is most deeply rooted, where the situation is so dire that only they can act. They don't boast of their glorious feats of arms, and they kept many terrible secrets within their order, so much so that the nature of their work must remain as unknown as possible.
Feared by their enemies and dreaded by their allies, the Templars are by far the least 'human' of the defenders of humanity. They are taciturn and their faces are always covered by their helmets or thick hoods. Those who have had the privilege of witnessing one of their confrontations have seen nothing but a massacre perpetrated by merciless warriors with unfathomable hatred. The Templars are the monsters of the battlefield, an army of monsters trained to face legions of nightmarish creatures.
However this was in the past, now, their founder is long dead and their legions suffered defeat after defeat for centuries, leaving only a fraction of the original force of the order. In the year of death 580 the templars are nothing more than a bunch of monsters hunting down other monsters, sometimes even pillaging humans villages to satisfy their thirst for blood.
Lord Aviel
In the darkest depths of the Dark Ages, when humanity teetered on the edge of oblivion against the relentless tide of evil, four formidable beings emerged from the shadows, summoned by the ancient gods of the Dreamlands. These humans were not mere mortals; they were titans of power and wisdom, each radiating an aura of charisma and nobility that captivated all who dared to gaze upon them.
Yet among them stood one whose very presence struck terror into the hearts of the brave.
This figure cloaked in darkness carried an aura so malevolent that even the most hardened warriors shivered in fear when looking in his direction.
His eyes, like abyssal voids, held a sorrow deeper than any nightmare, a profound sadness that whispered of untold tragedies and unfathomable loss.
He was a harbinger of dread, a storm of chaos and despair, yet within that darkness lay a flicker of hope, a reminder that even the most profound shadows can be pierced by the light of redemption.
In a world on the brink of destruction, this enigmatic demigod would soon become both the reverred lord of the Grave Templars, wielding his power to carry the will of the God of Death while making his legions of knights triumph over the worst horrors the Outer world has to offer.
The demigod would go by the name of Aviel
Founding of the order
Once the mighty Aviel had walked through the corrupted expanse of Damonceau, purging it of every threat using only the sheer force of his mind, he stopped at the gates of a humble village known as Kaban. There, he was met with a ragged band of villagers standing resolute, their bodies shielding their children like frail shields against the oncoming storm. They brandished pitiful spears and rusted agricultural tools, trembling yet defiant before the looming figure of a demigod.
Aviel was the apostle of the Great God of Death and therefore his appearance was not that of a mere human, he was extremely tall, standing about two and a half meters tall, and his body was like that of an angel, with a delicate face, embellished by eyes and hair as dark as night. It was obvious that he was extremely powerful, as each of his movements, even the most subtle, seemed to distort the invisible forces present in the air.
In the grim reality of their plight, these mortals knew that any act of defiance was doomed. Yet, as they faced him, their eyes blazed with a fierce determination that Aviel had never witnessed before. Most humans had crumbled at his sight or the sight of eldritch horrors, but here, these villagers stood their ground, a flicker of hope amidst the encroaching darkness. Their bravery struck a chord deep within him, planting a seed of admiration in the heart of a being forged from cosmic power a respect for the unyielding spirit of those he had always deemed weak.
“Fear not,” Aviel intoned, his voice a low rumble that resonated through the air like distant thunder. He assured them he posed no threat, but his presence was heavy with the weight of impending doom. When he revealed his purpose, the villagers listened, their eyes wide with a mix of terror and hope as he exposed the reason of his presence and what his plan was for the future of mankind. As his words washed over them, some wept while others knelt in reverence, recognizing this god-like figure who had descended from the heavens, a specter of salvation amidst their despair.
But in the depths of Aviel’s mind, a pragmatic purpose brewed. He envisioned an army, a legion of warriors forged from the ashes of their desperation, destined to stand against the unspeakable horrors of the Outer Realm. With grim determination, he chose Kaban as the crucible for this new order. He would transform this humble village into a fortress, a bastion against the encroaching night.
He gathered the villagers and imparted the ancient knowledge of the Dreamlands, the gods who had sent him, and the Outer Gods who thrived on chaos and despair. He painted a bleak tapestry of their future, a stark reminder of the malevolence that lurked just beyond the veil of reality. Under his relentless tutelage, he began to train them, reshaping their bodies and spirits, binding them to a cause greater than themselves.
Thus, the foundations of the Grave Templars were laid, a brotherhood forged in blood and shadows, sworn to protect the fragile light of humanity against the encroaching darkness. As their training commenced, the village of Kaban transformed, becoming not just a refuge, but a harbinger of the storm to come, a dark promise that even in the face of despair, they would rise, ready to meet the horrors lurking in the night.
2) The Death of Hope
one fateful day, Aviel lost his life, fighting against The incarnation of Cthulhu leaving behind him the hopes of his Knights shattered, since then, the Grave templars order was never the same and was fated to slowly descend into madness.A Never-Ending War
<<We accuse you of practising dark ablutionsNow, the Grave Templars have descended into chaos. Aviel’s demise triggered a devastating fracture in their ranks, leaving a fractured order, slowly loosing sight of it's duty. They have transformed from noble warriors into monstrous hunters, their once-honorable code replaced by an insatiable thirst for violence. The armor of the Templars is now stained with the blood of countless creatures, even humans Driven by the echoes of Aviel’s teachings but twisted by grief and rage, the Templars roam the night, preying on any creature that bears the mark of darkness. They see themselves as purifiers, convinced that by spilling blood, they are enacting Aviel's will. Each Templar is a grotesque reflection of their former selves, their features often marred by madness and violence, their eyes glinting with a feral hunger. Ritualistic hunts have replaced the structured missions of the past, and tales of their savagery echo through the land. Those who once sought to protect now embrace the chaos, reveling in the hunt, the thrill of the kill becoming their new faith.
Giving free rein to your most demonic impulses
But now is the time for punishment, as the God of Death foretold
You're a witch, a torturer beyond compare
Black is the blood that flows in your arteries
We will gut you, gouge out your eyes and purify your soul with fire >>
It is even said that among the perfect Knights of the Order, some have even fallen into madness and corruption, joining ranks with the traitors.
One day, the spiritual link between the templars and the god of death was severed, meaning that their god was defeated and that it was impossible to form any more knights.
In this era of darkness, only one small part of the Order has managed to remain more or less faithful to their origins: the knight monks, thanks to their Castellan who has managed to lead the circle with an iron fist, even without the intervention of lord Aviel. However, scarred for life by the death of his master, the Castellan has also led his order to sink a little further into madness, and although he doesn't have the uncontrollable bloodlust of the order's members, the Cenobite Circle is now no more than a shadow of its former self, abandoning honour for a ruthless hunt for the greatest threats of the shadows, hold responsible for the demise of humanity and the death of the lord.
They are trapped in a cycle of violence and despair, forever hunting the very darkness they sought to vanquish, believing that only through endless bloodshed can they atone for their shattered past. In this relentless pursuit, the Grave Templars have become what they once fought against: monstrous echoes of their own tragic fall.
The Cenobite Circle
<<Darkness is our armour, devotion is our shield, and our weapon is the purity of our cause.>>The Cenobite Knights are a special order within the Templars, made up only of knights who have demonstrated total immunity to the powers of the outer gods. Once discovered, they were taken from their legion and placed in a secret area within Kaban, where they were trained for years to use the powers of the gods as weapon and perfect their resistance to psychic violence. There are many mysteries surrounding the KnightMonks and they are rarely seen on the battlefield, they mostly live in secrecy and when they do show themselves on a battlefield with another Legion, it means that a great threat has appeared and they must act. It wass when the Templars were faced with the greatest threat in existence, and when all struggle was in vain, that they call upon the Cenobite Circle. They were the last bulwark agains't the Eldritch beings and are revered within the Order as the chosen ones, destined to triumph over all obstacles placed in the path of humanity, whatever they may be. Nowadays, the castellan of the Cenobite Circle holds himself and his knights responsible for the death of their lord, as they were his closest guards and he his most loyal follower, and as such the knight monks see themselves as sinners and fall into a cruel dedication of penance through duty. They now follow the will of their mad master, a voice that echoes in the depths of their minds, urging them to hunt the Elder beings that once threatened their world. What they perceive as a righteous crusade is, in reality, a descent into madness, each hunt further blurring the line between hunter and hunted. No longer do they communicate with other orders, even those few remaining sane Templars who still remember the values they once cherished. Isolated from their former allies, they roam the land in small, frenzied packs, remembrance of their past BrotherHoods, their laughter a chilling reminder of the camaraderie they once shared. The whispers of their former glory haunt them as they drag their battered souls through the darkness, each slaughter an attempt to fill the void left by Aviel’s absence. Their eyes, once filled with the light of purpose, now gleam with the cold intensity of madness. Every kill is both a tribute to their Castellan and a reminder of their failure to honor the legacy of Aviel. They wear their sins like a shroud, the blood of countless innocents staining their once-gleaming armor, a cruel mockery of the justice they swore to uphold.
2) Organization
Past Doctrines
By becoming Templars, Knights adopted a simple, even minimalist lifestyle. The Templars had very strong bonds with each other and spent most of their time together in their stronghold called Kaban.
Their habits were very strict and helped to keep their bodies and minds in perfect condition for the battles to come, for the Templars their clarity of mind was their most important weapon in the war against creatures, for if their mind wavered for even a second during a confrontation, it would have been an exploitable weakness for the enemy. The Templars hold daily group masses and meditations in a huge room at the heart of their fortress, laid out like the Garden of Eden.
In Kaban, values such as humility and discretion are considered paramount in order to convey the secrets of the Order and the nobility of its mission. If a Templar began to take pride in his exploits, he would be sent on a pilgrimage to meditate on his place in the great chessboard of existence.
Though their way of life may appear calm and wise, the Templars display unimaginable ferocity in battle and will stop at nothing to bring down their enemies. They have an unshakable belief in their spirit and the nobility of their mission, and will pursue the avatars of the Old God into the underworld if necessary.
But make no mistake, though their methods are fierce, the Templars are led by excellent tacticians who know how to tackle any situation and get the best out of their troops.
Each Templar is trained to the utmost, and is as good at fighting as they are at tactics, perspicacity and even medicine, which allows them to treat themselves on the battlefield and use all sorts of medicinal herbs; this has allowed the Order to be extremely durable, as they do not need any physician in their ranks.
The Order also has an extremely talented legion of vanguards who precede the bulk of the troops to gather valuable information and plan each mission according to the enemy's strengths and weaknesses.
The Templars always act on a threat-by-threat basis, deploying the necessary force to deal with each threat and never underestimating their opponents.
They have developed their tactics and strategy by analysing Percival's legacy to humanity, the research notebook he filled out during his expedition to the crypts, which lists many of the creatures of the night and their specific characteristics, allowing a skilled tactician to devise an effective strategy with a minimum margin of error to deal with each threat.
The organisation and hierarchy of the Knights Templar is kept as simple as possible to allow for a fluid exchange between the governing bodies and the legions on the battlefield. The Order is divided into 3 governing Ordos
Ordo Politica |
Ordo Militia |
Ordo Servita |
|---|---|---|
| the Civilian Circle, made up of the governing bodies, responsible for allocating theatres of operation to the legions in the field and for collecting and analysing the information reported by the scouts. It is also the second circle that organises life within the fortress of Kaban. | The Ordo Militia comprises the various army corps and their masters, and although it is kept secret, the Cenobite Circle is also part of this Ordo, however its authority greatly exceeds it. | The Ordo Servitia includes the various servants required for the smooth running of the order, the squires and the guardians of the armoury. |
3) Military Corps
The Ravens
The Raven are made up of the Knight Instigators (Veteran Avian Knights), and the Master of The Ravens, they are the Vanguard of the Order and are always in the most dangerous situation, gathering information, carrying out special missions or eliminating enemy generals from nightmarish armies.
The Raven usually establish temporary camps all over the territory as they almost never stop to Kaban, they are always on the hunt and joining the Ravens usually means you'll die on a mission before being able to come back to kaban, however, the knight Instigators are aware of this and they embrace their fateful destiny because they are Templars, proud Veteran of the Grave Templars order and no evil will ever be able to make them tremble in fear.
For their service, the Knight instigators use a wide variety of weapons, such as standard sword, longsword or Executioners Longsword, some of them also like to use a special war hammer called the BirdHammer.

The Harriers
<<Beyond the sword and behind the shield>>Made up of Avian Knight Legions, Knight Captains and the Master of the Harriers , the Harriers are the body of the Order, spreading the Templar's wrath wherever evil is found. They are spread all over Dreamlands and reunite when needed, for example they can form an army in order to carry an Elder-Being Subjugation or a Witch Hunt, even though most of the time the witches must be slain by the Cenobite Circle Members or the Masters of the order themselves. Their Master, sir Julius is probably the most formidable Warrior within the Order, only Bested by the Castellan and Lord AVIEL AVIEL, it is said he has never lost a duel and was even able to stand his ground against the forces of evil during the siege of Rubika, enabling The Cenobite Circle to arrive in time.
The Avian knight mainly use 2 types of weapons, either a Standard Sword and a shield, or a Longsword , some of them also pick up Crossbow or simple bows to hunt animals for food or deal with the small enemies on their expedition, it is a good way to preserve their weapons.
The Knight Captains are Carrying the Winged Longswords , that are passed down to each generation of Captains within each legion.
The Vultures
<<We bring jugement upon our foes>>The Vultures are a special corps, consisting only of Enchanting Riflemen and the Master of The Vultures, they specialise in support warfare and targeting elite enemies. The Vultures are few but their FirePower is unmatched, they are Enchanters that can use the power of the Bark Runes to create their bullets, these bullets are made of Silver and can inflict wounds to every Eldritch Creatures, even Elder-Beings such as Ithaqua.
Often assisting the The Cenobite Circle in the subjugation of their creatures, the Riflemen are highly revered within the Order, but they are ordinary humans who cannot become Knights, and as such are extremely weak, which is why they never leave Kaban without the escort of a Knight Legion or the KnightMonks. They are extremely valuable and mustn't be used unwisely on the battlefield. Which is why their master is the most brilliant Tactician Within the Order.
Their Weapon of choice is their famous Enchanted Rifle , capable of firing the bullets they produce, every rifleman carries his rifle everywhere and takes care of it almost like a child.
The Templars recruit aspiring knights directly from the survivors of the battlefields they have traversed, believing that if a civilian can remain lucid in the midst of such horror, then he or she possesses the strength of mind sought by the Grave Templars. These chosen few then become aspiring knights and undergo several years of training to become true Templars. Some humans are also recruited to be Squire for the Order

Like all orders of chivalry, the Knights Templar possess a number of powerful relics that are passed down to the most deserving knights to perpetuate their legacy and harness their power in battle. the relics of the order are : The Sword of Penance A masterfully crafted sword handed down to each captain of the first Legion of Knights, this sword is said to have the power to make even the eldritch creature scream in pain when touched by its red blade. It was found in the year 1161 by the first legion in the depth of the crypts, it's origins are unknown but it is obvious that this sword was made to fight against the creatures from the crypt. The Black Blade An obsidian knife carried by the Raven Master, it doesn't have any special power apart from its sharpness, but it is considered by the Master to be a good luck charm to help him lead his men to victory. He never leaves it behind and carries it on his belt, and once used it in battle when he lost his sword in a duel with a great enemy; it is said that it pierced the creature's skull with a single blow, saving the Raven Master's life.
