Custudo/Custodian

Someone tasked with protecting, cleaning, and managing a business. Often mistranslated as "Guard", "Janitor" or "Pimp" when dealing with a brothel.

Career

Qualifications

No education is required to hold the position, but experience in combat is highly sought after. Other desired traits are knowledge of how to clean and deal with difficult people without resorting to violence or intimidation. A common trait is being able to switch from being imposing and being caring quickly. Another trait that is greatly important is loyalty and trustworthiness, as the Custudo is intrusted with both the Human resources of the business but also the valuables and assests

Career Progression

There is no direct progression for a custudo independent of their charge. As where the work grows in funds and acclaime, often so do they. Many businesses start with one Custudo and as they grow, hire more, leading to the original moving from direct actions to management. Some custody may move from job to job as they gain fame/infamy but, being that loyalty is an important quality, jumping can lead to an initial drop in the value of one's services.    Many custudo never surpass the pay of a simple guard but some become equal in status as a Greathouse Senechal.

Payment & Reimbursement

Depending on the size of the business, a custudo may only be called in when a customer needs to be reminded to pay or for the occasional walk-through to make sure everything is as it should be. The lack of consistent requirements means little or no flat pay but the custudo will log the things they do and are reimbursed for the hassel. Other businesses that expect there to be frequent issues will hire one to stay on the premises for most of the day and thus pay quite a bit in flat salary or give the Custudo a small percentage of the daily business.   Additional income comes from dealing with issues outside the ideal functions of the business, called "Hassel". Cleaning and walking difficult customers to the door is part of the general function. However, when a custudo needs to force customers to pay, collect debts or forcibly remove someone from the grounds of their charge, they often are given additional pay. Likewise, mopping up blood, vomit or other messes besides standard dirt and grime earns them Hassel. The amounts paid for Hassel are often agreed on at the end of the day, but common hassles will sometimes have their pay listed in writing.

Other Benefits

Once again, the benefits given to a custudo depend on the business(es) they work for. Common benefits are either free or heavily reduced charges for the goods or services of the business. These will be limited, of course, or risk the custody becoming either a money sink or eventual competition. Also, many Custudo will receive an offer of free lodging if the grounds they work have room for such things.

Perception

Purpose

Custodo fills all the roles needed but the most common would be that of a security guard, Jaintitor, and crisis manager.

Social Status

Most Custudo share similar status to other skilled labor such as a clerk or mid-level craftsmen. Most Custudo tend to be from the lower ends of society and built the trust and skill necessary to become more than where they came from. They are for the most part considered respectable by those who know and understand the culture from which they come. However, many outsiders see them as little more than sell swords and merchants of flesh in the case of those who work in seeder establishments. That said, those who are on retainer for multiple businesses are seen as lesser than those devoted to a single enterprise.

Demographics

Custudo is not a rare profession but not one many get into. It requires acting with both a heavy hand and finesse depending on the situation. However, many businesses have people or property that need protection and caring for, so Custudo are in high demand.

Operations

Tools

Most Custudo carry a truncheon but few are issued it.

Provided Services

Protection for Persons, Goods, and property of a business. Cleaning and handyman services.

Dangers & Hazards

The main job for a Custudo is the protection of the people and assets of a business, which leads to being involved in fights, especially if part of their job includes ensuring payment. Likewise, being that Corico is a feudal society, some Custudo has to thread the web that comes when goods or services have been rendered to a member of the nobility who has decided not to pay.
