Arid Parrots
A species of parrots adapted from living in arid or semi-arid environments.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The Arid parrot is much like most other parrot species such as possessing a strong, curved, broad bill. The upper mandible is prominent, curves downward, and comes to a point. It is not fused to the skull, which allows it to move independently, and contributes to the tremendous biting pressure the birds are able to exert.
This comes in handy with carving out chunks of cacti for both consuming and making nesting holes.
They also come in many colors, however, most individuals bear colors suited for blending into their environment. An exception to this is when seeking a mate when both males and females grow feathers on the tips of their wings in colors to contract the environment. An example of this is how the Subspecies in the Blasted waists between Corico and Aradanin come in a medium Green color to match the sands there but grow Bright red or Pink feathers when seeking a mate.
One way that Arid Parrots differ from many "True Parrots" is in wing shape. Most Parrots have elliptical wings best suited for fast take-off and quick turns. This is to move in an environment of dense foliage such as jungles or forests. Arid Parrots' wings have elongated, forming a halfway point between elliptical wings and passive soaring, allowing them to cover more distance using less energy.
Genetics and Reproduction
They reproduce sexually and lay eggs to hatch altricial (see helpless) chicks.
