The Wailing plague

From the non stop wailing of a infant to the painfull shrieking of the adults, the wailing plague knows no mercy to anyone that it gets to. This disease manifests itself as a relentless, agonizing wail emitted by those infected, echoing through streets and countysides, heraliding the spread of the disease. The sound is said to be so piercing that it drives those hearing it to madness.

Transmission & Vectors

Transmission of the wailing plague between people occurs through the manifestation of the disease's symptoms. When an individual infected with the Wailing Plague begins emitting the characteristic wails, those nearby are susceptible to contracting the disease.   The transmission occurs through direct exposure to the sound waves produced by the infected individual's wails. This exposure can happen when people are in close proximity to the infected individual or within the range of the sound waves, which can travel through the air and reverberate off surfaces.   Once exposed to the sound waves, individuals become infected with the wailing plague. The disease takes hold within their bodies, and they, too, begin to emit the agonizing wails characteristic of the infection, thereby becoming carriers themselves.

Causes

The wailing plague is transmitted through a unique phenomenon known as "Resonance Contagion." Resonance Contagion occurs when certain individuals resonate with a specific frequency emitted by magicly tainted lands, in rare ocurances it could also be caused by a natural occurrence, such as a celestial event or a geological anomaly.   Transmission of the wailing plague begins when individuals unknowingly encounter this resonant frequency. It could be triggered by being in proximity to a specific geographic location, exposure to certain celestial alignments, or even through a collective emotional resonance among a group of people.   Once someone is exposed to the resonant frequency, they become carriers of the wailing plague. The infection lies dormant within them until triggered by a subsequent resonance event or by external stimuli that resonate with the initial frequency. Once the disease gets actiated, the infected individuals begin to emit the characteristic wails of the wailing plague. These wails serve as a signal, drawing others to the carriers and spreading the infection further.

Symptoms

Once the wailing plague gets activated, the victem of it imedialy starts to suffor the symptoms of the disease, alongside the wialing any of the other symptoms may manifest aling side eachother.

Treatment

There is no cure for the wailing plague outside of magic like the Lesser Restoration spell or the paladins Lay on Hands. Which means that it a pandemic can be avoided as long as treatment is there in time to cure the first few patients. Sadly most of the time, when the disease manifests it is already too late and it will have already spread too far for a city or local comunity to take control over with these means.

Prognosis

The likely course of the wailing plague would be highly distressing and potentially devastating, with various stages and outcomes depending on the severity of the infection and the effectiveness of interventions. Here's a potential progression of the condition:
  1. Exposure and Infection: The initial stage involves exposure to the sound waves emitted by infected individuals, leading to transmission of the wailing plague. Infected individuals may not immediately exhibit symptoms but become carriers of the disease.
  2. Onset of Symptoms: As the infection progresses, individuals begin to manifest physical and mental symptoms, including uncontrollable wailing, distorted facial features, bloodshot eyes, hallucinations, paranoia, and agitation. These symptoms may vary in severity depending on factors such as the individual's immune response and overall health.
  3. Aggravation and Spread: Without effective treatment or containment measures, the symptoms of the wailing plague worsen over time, leading to increased suffering and a higher risk of transmission to others. The relentless wails emitted by infected individuals serve as a beacon, attracting more victims and perpetuating the spread of the disease.
  4. Complications and Mortality: In severe cases, the wailing plague can lead to complications such as respiratory distress, organ failure, and psychological trauma. Without quick intervention, the condition may prove to be fatal for some individuals.
  5. Undead Transformation: In some rare cases of the wailing plague, there may be a risk of turning undead for those who succumb to the disease. The intense suffering and anguish experienced by infected individuals could potentially fuel dark forces, leading to their reanimation as undead driven by the same relentless wails that characterized their affliction in their last moments alive.
