Mechautons
Created to serve in the Godswar, the Mechautons are a relic of that ancient time. Though the war is long over their programming for battle remains. Initially granted a rudimentary intelligence required to fight and kill as the Mechautons have been built and rebuilt — the parts from different sides intermingling — as the Master Templates have degraded over time. Deviations from their initial programming are cropping up and individualism is building. Their only unity provided by the Factory Bastions, as they deviate they lose their purpose and strike out to find one.
Deviance
As the Mechautons are rebuilt with parts scavanged from other armies and the Master Templates break down, more Mechautons are developing a sense of individuality. Those who cease to follow the directives of the Master Template will set out to discover an existence of their own. The longer they have existed outside control of the Master Template, and the more they have repaired and replaced parts on their bodies, the more their individuality develops.
As Everburning Eye is the only known location of the Factory Bastions, the Mechatuton only exist on that Sphere. While Factory Bastions may exist elsewhere on the Spheres, they lay in ruin, their Mechautons without power to fuel them.
Cultures
The dominant culture is the war between the Factory Bastions playing out ancient battles in a perpetual stalemate. As Mechautons deviate and leave the war, they latch onto the cultures that take them in.
Settlements
Beyond the Factory Bastions, the Mechautons do not have communities as they exist as individuals. When discovered by scavengers, Mechautons will latch onto them in search of service. But with little knowledge of anything but violence they have little to offer scavengers. With training they can be taught other skills over time, and their personality developed. But at any time the old war directives can be triggered — especially by other Mechautons — making them a threat to their host community.
Religion
The Mechautons don't have religion of their own. Until their deviance, they follow the directives their Master Template builds into them. As the deviant Mechautons latch on to other civilizations they may go through the motions of worship taught to them, but they have not developed a sense of a soul or necessity to preserve it beyond physical destruction.
