Geological / environmental eventThe 'great discontuity' refers to a massive gap in the fossil record, as the Cytan races suddenly appear with no obvious ancestors. This is a subject of intense and contentious debate among scholars, with multiple possibilities having been suggested, of which simultaneous divine creation is the least controversial, if not the most probable. While what the Discontinuity conceals is a mystery, what is generally agreed is that all five of the great Cytan races were first definitively observed in Alamorde around thirty thousand years ago.

The Colleges, each representing one of the seven colors of magic, were the principle center of power for much of Dawnrealm's history. They maintained independence from the various feudal nations, but retained the right to extract tithes and (theoretical) fealty. This relationship was formalized with the signing of the Planar Concordance.
