Shattering Sickness

Though the hard, stony Suevira form is exceedingly durable, the enreja; the layer of strong, pliable muscle that lies below the inorganic exoskeleton, is more susceptible to damage. In addition, if a Sueviran does not sustain their body with necessary minerals and ample water, the enreja can become brittle and begin to tear.   If left unchecked, this tearing can prove to be fatal. This illness, named Shattering Sickness could be considered a Sueviran equivalent to severe malnutrition.

Causes

The Sueviran enreja requires a number of key minerals, inorganic compounds, and water in order to function. enreja, unlike organic muscle tissue, is built more like a crystalline lattice rather than a bundle of fibers. The lattice is pliant, able to bend, flex, and stretch, in addition, it generates vital terreton, which provides structure and protection to the Suevira. Much of a Sueviran's intake goes towards sustaining it. When deprived of the compounds and water needed, it dies, becoming brittle and incapable of producing terreton.

Symptoms

Shattering Sickness's early onset symptoms include difficulty of movement, and prickling pain across moving body parts.   As the nutritional deprivation becomes more severe, cracking and popping noises can be heard, along with bleeding from the fractures made. Pain is sharp and more severe. Mobility continues to decrease. The enreja's begins to die, and terreton generation begins to falter, and pieces of the terreton begin to fall off.   If left unchecked, terminal symptoms include severe pain, loud cracking noises as the enreja breaks apart, A complete lack of terreton, severe bleeding, and death as the enreja shatters.

Treatment

Shattering Sickness can be treated at any point before its final few hours. Past that point, the enreja dies, becoming incapable of generating terreton. Even if revitalized after this point, the Suevira, becomes completely immobile, incapable of holding its form and eventually crushes itself to death.

Prognosis

There are three stages to Shattering Sickness. The first stage takes place after either 3 days without nutrition or 2 without water. Mild Shattering Sickness is easily reversible and can be remedied within hours.   Moderate shattering sickness sets in after 5 days without nutrition or 3.5 without water. It's still reversible, but permanent damage can occur, and the longer it lasts, the more likely damage will occur.   Severe Shattering Sickness sets in after a week without nutrition or 5 days without water. It is almost 100% fatal.

Sequela

Depending on how severe the case is, recovery can range from full to crippling. If a portion of the enreja dies, it stays dead, and becomes incapable of producing the defensive, structural terreton. These areas are far more susceptible to injury, environment and even bulging.
