The Undercroft
The Undercroft is a massive network of tunnels and rooms, more or less a megadungeon underneath Trader's Gate. It can be used to go more or less anywhere in the city undetected, requiring on average about four hours of travel time and a skill challenge (see note).
Geography
The Undercroft of Trader’s Gate is composed of aqueducts and sluiceways as well as ruins, old storerooms and habitation, and unfinished caverns with marked and unmarked paths. The Tiekotin River runs directly through and under the city, providing fresh water and sewer.
Fauna & Flora
The Undercroft is home to a variety of subterannean wildlife, principal of which are the Voresindesja or Tide Crawlers, massive predatory millipede-like insects which serve as a principal source of meat for the city and adventure for the foolhardy. There are massive groves of fungi in the deeps which were seeded by the Rhûn from their farms in the Freeholds.
Natural Resources
The Undercroft is the principal source of fresh water for the city due to the raging flow of the Tiekotin River. There is significant supply of high quality stone as well, even without salvaging the ruins. There are rumors in the city of gem and precious metal mines in the deeps, but no one has ever filed a claim for such a site with the city.
History
Constructed ages ago, the Undercroft was the natural result of Rhûn settlement of the area, and in fact is the earliest Rhûn settlement outside the Freeholds themselves. The city of Trader's Gate eventually grew out of the Undercroft, as the need for additional facilities and space on the surface won out over the Rhûnic preference for subterranean living.
Tourism
The Undercroft is a marvelous mixture of natural formation and Rhûnic architecture, the ingenuity of the latter shaping the former to meet the needs of its masters. The sheer scale of the Undercroft is unknown to latter-day dwellers of the city, and there is no comprehensive map of it to be found, although maps of sections do exist.
