PAX

The PAX was the primary governing body of the human interstellar diaspora following the fall of the Hegemony of Man in 2412 CE. The Pax was brought into power by the rise of the Roman Catholic Church following the economic difficulties that had been plaguing the Hegemony for the past 20 years. With people in desperate times turning to faith and eventually voting those with similar values into office. The Hegemony was dissolved. The pope at the time Pope Julius VI was name the supreme leader of both the Roman Catholic Church and the now theocracy.   Within only a year, many Outworlds quickly joined with PAX, following similar beliefs in the church. However many still remained outside the fold. It was by 2417 CE. Pope Julius VI would reestablish the Knights' Templar. These specially selected soldiers who were the best of the best would bring the word of God to any planet that resisted their blessings.   By 2425 CE a new pope is elected Pope Pius XVI, only days after his coronation the Pope. Pope Pius XVI reveals the Crucible program. Only the most pius may receive this technology which makes anyone who bares it true immortal. In practice only Pope Pius XVI, the cardinals, some of the higher elite, and the Knights' Templar find themselves as part of the program.   After 600 years of power, inner factions within PAX reveal to the greater galactic community what powers the Crucible is the very souls of the followers of the Roman Catholic Church. Leaving many who are affected by this price in a withered husk state. This sets off the War of Souls that would scar the many worlds over the next 25 years. This leads to PAX falling back to a corner of it's Theocracy leaving only a handful of systems still under their thumb.

Legislative Body

The legislative body of PAX is known as the "Sacred Council." It is responsible for crafting and passing laws, as well as making important decisions that affect the governance and direction of the theocracy. The Sacred Council serves as the representative assembly of PAX, and its members come from various levels of the Church hierarchy and planetary representatives.

Composition and Membership:

The Sacred Council is composed of a diverse group of individuals who hold significant positions within the Roman Catholic Church and the PAX theocracy. The members include:
  • Cardinals: High-ranking clergy appointed by the Pope, who also serve as advisors to the Pope on matters of faith and governance.
  • Bishops: Leaders of specific dioceses and regions, overseeing the spiritual affairs and administration of the Church within their respective territories.
  • Abbots and Abbesses: Heads of important religious orders and monasteries, bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to the Council.
  • Planetary Representatives: Elected or appointed individuals representing various planets and colonies within the PAX territories. They serve as a link between the people of their respective worlds and the central government of PAX.

Functions and Responsibilities:

The Sacred Council fulfills several vital functions within PAX:
  • Legislation: The Council is responsible for drafting and passing laws that govern various aspects of PAX's society, including religious practices, governance, trade, and social conduct.
  • Policy Decisions: The Council plays a key role in making important policy decisions that affect the well-being of the theocracy, including matters of defense, resource allocation, and diplomatic relations.
  • Election of the Pope: In the event of a vacancy in the Papal office, the Sacred Council oversees the process of electing a new Pope. The College of Cardinals, as part of the Sacred Council, is particularly instrumental in this process.
  • Advisory Role: The Sacred Council provides valuable advice and counsel to the Pope, especially on matters that require collective wisdom and input from various perspectives.
  • Mediation and Conflict Resolution: In times of internal disputes or conflicts between different factions within PAX, the Council may act as a mediator to find solutions and maintain unity.

Decision-Making Process:

The decision-making process within the Sacred Council is deliberative and hierarchical. Major decisions often require consensus among the members, while some matters may be decided by a majority vote.   The Pope, as the supreme leader of PAX, holds significant influence over the Council's decisions. His decisions and directives carry great weight, and his presence in the Council ensures the alignment of its actions with the will of the Church and the theocracy.   The Sacred Council is a pivotal institution that governs the inner workings of PAX, providing a balance of power between the religious authorities and the planetary representatives. Its deliberations and decisions shape the direction and policies of the theocracy, impacting the lives of billions of people across the galaxy.

Judicial Body

The judicial body of PAX is known as the "Holy Tribunal." It serves as the supreme court and legal authority within the theocracy, responsible for interpreting and enforcing the laws of PAX based on the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Composition and Membership:

The Holy Tribunal is composed of distinguished jurists, legal scholars, and high-ranking clergy who possess a deep understanding of both canon law and secular law. The members of the Holy Tribunal are appointed by the Pope, with some positions filled by prominent members of the College of Cardinals and other influential figures within the Church.

Functions and Responsibilities:

The Holy Tribunal fulfills several vital functions within PAX:
  • Interpreting Canon Law: Canon law consists of the ecclesiastical laws and regulations governing the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy Tribunal is responsible for interpreting and applying these laws to various legal matters that come before the court.
  • Applying Secular Law: While the laws of PAX are closely aligned with the tenets of the Church, the Holy Tribunal also handles secular legal matters, including civil disputes, criminal cases, and matters of governance within the theocracy.
  • Adjudicating Disputes: The Holy Tribunal acts as the final arbiter in legal disputes that arise within PAX. It has the authority to settle conflicts and make legally binding decisions.
  • Reviewing Legislation: The Holy Tribunal reviews proposed laws and decrees passed by the Sacred Council to ensure they align with canon law and uphold the values of the Church.
  • Ensuring Faithfulness to Doctrine: The Tribunal ensures that individuals and organizations within PAX adhere to the teachings and doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. It may take actions against those found to be promoting heresy or engaging in activities contrary to Church principles.
  • Trial of Heretics and Dissidents: The Holy Tribunal presides over trials of individuals accused of heresy, dissent, or other offenses against the Church or PAX's authority.
  • Protection of Sacred Artifacts: The Tribunal is responsible for the preservation and protection of sacred relics, artifacts, and religious sites within PAX's territory.

Decision-Making Process:

The Holy Tribunal operates as a hierarchical body, with decisions made collectively by its members. The Pope's influence is significant, as his guidance on matters of faith and doctrine carries great weight in the Tribunal's deliberations.   Most cases before the Holy Tribunal are decided by a panel of judges, and their decisions are binding. In the case of particularly significant or contentious matters, the full assembly of the Holy Tribunal may convene to reach a verdict.

Enforcement and Authority:

As the highest judicial authority within PAX, the decisions of the Holy Tribunal are final and binding. Violation of its judgments can result in severe penalties, ranging from excommunication to imprisonment or even execution, depending on the gravity of the offense.   The Holy Tribunal's role in upholding the laws and values of the Roman Catholic Church and PAX ensures the stability and cohesion of the theocracy. Its impartiality and dedication to justice are essential in maintaining the rule of law and preserving the faith of the faithful.

Executive Body

Within PAX, the responsibility for enforcing the laws falls primarily on two key entities:
  • Crusader Legions: The Crusader Legions, as the main military force of PAX, play a significant role in enforcing the laws and maintaining order within the theocracy. They are tasked with upholding the authority of the Pope and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church through military might. This includes suppressing rebellions, quelling uprisings, and enforcing PAX's laws on various planets and systems.
  • Inquisitors: The Inquisitors, a secretive and feared branch within PAX, also play a crucial role in enforcing the laws. They are responsible for rooting out heresy, dissent, and potential threats to the Church and PAX's authority. Inquisitors have broad powers to investigate, interrogate, and take action against individuals or groups perceived as enemies of the faith or the theocracy. They are also involved in maintaining the purity of the Church and its doctrines.
The combined efforts of the Crusader Legions and the Inquisitors ensure that the laws of PAX are enforced, dissent is suppressed, and any challenges to the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and the theocracy are met with swift and decisive action.

Structure

  • Supreme Pontiff (Pope): The Supreme Pontiff, also known as the Pope, is the highest authority in PAX and serves as both the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the head of the theocracy. The Pope holds significant power and influence, making critical decisions for the entire organization.
  • The College of Cardinals: The College of Cardinals is composed of high-ranking clergy appointed by the Pope. They act as advisors and administrators, assisting the Pope in making important decisions and governing the Church and PAX. The College of Cardinals also plays a role in the selection of a new Pope when the office becomes vacant.
  • The Crucibles Council: This council is responsible for overseeing the Crucible program and deciding who among the faithful is worthy of receiving the technology that grants immortality. Its members are chosen from among the highest-ranking clergy and elite of PAX.
  • Knights Templar: The reestablished Knights Templar are a special and elite military force within PAX. They are highly skilled soldiers, trained to be both fierce warriors and missionaries, bringing the word of God to planets that resist PAX's influence. The Knights Templar report directly to the Pope and carry out missions on his orders.
  • Episcopates: Each planetary system or major colony within PAX's domain is overseen by an Episcopate, which is headed by a Bishop or Cardinal. They are responsible for local governance, enforcing PAX's laws, and maintaining the Church's influence.
  • Planetary Governors: Planetary Governors are appointed by the Episcopates to govern individual planets and their regions. They are responsible for implementing PAX's policies and ensuring the loyalty of the populace.
  • Inquisitors: The Inquisitors are a feared and secretive group within PAX. Their primary task is to root out heresy, dissent, and potential threats to the Church and PAX's authority. They have broad powers to investigate, interrogate, and take action against perceived enemies of the faith.
  • Administrative Orders: These are various administrative bodies responsible for managing different aspects of PAX's operations, including logistics, finance, communication, and technology.
  • Faithful Congregations: Ordinary followers of the Roman Catholic Church fall under various congregations, each led by priests, deacons, or other clergy members. These congregations serve as the backbone of PAX's religious influence and outreach efforts.
  • Outworlds Council: Comprising representatives from planets that have joined PAX, the Outworlds Council serves as an advisory body to the Pope and the Crucibles Council, voicing the concerns and needs of member planets.
  • Crusader Legions: The Crusader Legions are the military backbone of PAX. Comprising well-trained and heavily armed soldiers, they form a formidable force that carries out the military campaigns of the theocracy. Unlike the elite and specialized Knights Templar, who are also skilled in diplomacy and missionary work, the Crusader Legions focus primarily on direct military engagement and conquest.
  • The Order of Paxians: The Paxians are a highly specialized and dedicated organization within PAX, serving as the backbone of the theocracy's interstellar operations. Chosen for their unwavering faith, exceptional skills, and loyalty to the Roman Catholic Church, Paxians form a formidable force dedicated to upholding PAX's authority and spreading its teachings throughout the galaxy.

  • Humility and Submission: Humility is highly valued in PAX's culture, with the belief that all individuals are creations of God and should be humble before His divine presence. This humility extends to submitting to the will of the Church and accepting the authority of PAX's leadership.
  • Art and Architecture: PAX's culture embraces art and architecture as expressions of faith and devotion. Religious symbols, grand cathedrals, and religious artworks are prominent features of PAX's cities and communities.
  • Rituals and Traditions: PAX's culture is rich in rituals and traditions, with various religious ceremonies, rites, and customs being practiced to commemorate important events and express devotion to God and the Church.

Public Agenda

The public agenda of PAX is centered around upholding and promoting the supremacy of the Roman Catholic Church and the theocracy's governance. At its core, the agenda aims to strengthen faith and unity among the faithful, emphasizing religious observances, devotion to the Pope, and adherence to moral principles. PAX seeks to spread its influence and teachings throughout the galaxy, promoting conversions and assimilating planets into the theocracy. The public agenda also includes the maintenance of order and stability, achieved through the enforcement of strict laws and the suppression of dissent or heresy. Additionally, PAX endeavors to protect sacred artifacts and sites, ensuring their preservation and sanctity. Through a combination of religious fervor, loyalty to the Church, and the might of the Crusader Legions and Inquisitors, PAX aims to project its message of faith and governance to every corner of the interstellar diaspora.

History

The Fall of the Hegemony of Man and the Resurgence of Faith (2412-2417 CE):

The collapse of the Hegemony of Man in 2412 CE marked the end of a once-mighty secular empire, leaving the galaxy in disarray. Economic hardships, political upheaval, and societal unrest plagued the worlds that were once under the Hegemony's rule. In these turbulent times, people sought solace and answers in the embrace of faith. The Roman Catholic Church, with its centuries-old traditions and teachings, experienced a profound resurgence during the years 2412 to 2417 CE. Churches across the galaxy saw an unprecedented influx of worshipers, drawn to the Church's message of compassion, forgiveness, and redemption. The Church, having weathered many historical storms, once again became a spiritual lighthouse for those adrift in a sea of uncertainty.

Charismatic Leaders and Unity Among the Faithful:
In the wake of the Hegemony's fall, charismatic leaders within the Roman Catholic Church emerged, capturing the hearts and minds of the faithful. These inspiring figures used their eloquence and spiritual insight to rally their followers, instilling a sense of unity and purpose. People from diverse backgrounds and cultures found common ground in their devotion to the Church and its teachings. The resurgence of faith fostered a spirit of communion among the faithful, providing a sense of belonging and community in a galaxy still reeling from the chaos of the Hegemony's demise.
The Church as a Beacon of Stability:
Amidst the uncertainty and upheaval, the Roman Catholic Church stood as a bastion of stability and continuity. Its ancient rituals, sacred ceremonies, and unwavering faith in God provided a sense of constancy and assurance to those seeking solace and hope. As other institutions crumbled, the Church's traditions endured, offering a sense of timeless comfort in a rapidly changing galaxy. In this way, the Roman Catholic Church emerged as a lighthouse of faith, guiding its followers through the darkness of uncertainty.
Spreading the Message:
Missionary Efforts and Influence: Emboldened by the resurgence of faith, the Roman Catholic Church embarked on renewed missionary efforts to spread its teachings to unexplored frontiers. Priests, nuns, and devoted followers ventured to distant planets and colonies, carrying the message of faith, hope, and redemption. The Church's influence expanded beyond traditional borders, impacting the formation of new governments and societies. Its teachings on social justice, compassion, and equality gained traction, influencing the moral fabric of societies across the galaxy. As the Roman Catholic Church's influence grew, it began to play a more significant role in shaping the values and principles of the interstellar diaspora.
Setting the Stage for PAX:
The remarkable rise of the Roman Catholic Church between 2412 and 2417 CE laid the groundwork for the establishment of PAX, a theocracy that would combine religious devotion with political power. The resurgence of faith, the emergence of charismatic leaders, and the spread of the Church's teachings set the stage for a new era in the galaxy. PAX would go on to wield both spiritual and temporal authority, leaving an indelible mark on the interstellar community for centuries to come. The journey from the ashes of the Hegemony of Man to the rise of PAX was a transformative period in galactic history, one that would shape the destiny of countless worlds and their inhabitants.

The Founding of PAX (2417 CE):

In 2417 CE, against the backdrop of a galaxy still reeling from the fall of the Hegemony of Man and the resurgence of the Roman Catholic Church, a momentous event unfolded—the founding of PAX. Capitalizing on the Church's newfound influence and the unification of its followers, a visionary decision was made to establish a theocratic state that would intertwine faith and governance. Under the unwavering leadership of Pope Julius VI, the Roman Catholic Church solidified its authority, uniting both believers and those seeking spiritual guidance in times of uncertainty, giving birth to the formidable entity known as PAX—the theocracy of the faithful.
A Fusion of Spiritual and Political Authority:
The founding of PAX marked an extraordinary fusion of spiritual and political power. Pope Julius VI, venerated as the supreme leader, assumed both spiritual and temporal authority, guiding not just matters of faith but also the governance of the theocracy. The once-clear lines between Church and state blurred as the Pope's teachings became intrinsic to PAX's laws and policies, shaping a society that adhered to the principles of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Rise of the Templars:
At the heart of PAX's foundation lay the reestablishment of the ancient and legendary order of the Templars. Handpicked from the ranks of PAX's most devout and skilled individuals, the Templars were an elite and highly trained group of soldiers tasked with carrying out the will of the Church. With unwavering loyalty to the Pope and armed with both spiritual zeal and formidable combat prowess, the Templars became the enforcers of PAX's authority, bringing the word of God to any planet that resisted the blessings of the theocracy.
Unity and Loyalty:
PAX's establishment resonated deeply with the faithful seeking direction and stability. The shared faith in the Roman Catholic Church forged an unshakable sense of unity and loyalty among its citizens. PAX transcended mere political boundaries, becoming a spiritual home and sanctuary for the devoted, united in their dedication to the Church and the theocracy.
Expansion and Integration:
PAX's influence expanded rapidly as numerous planets and Outworlds eagerly embraced its teachings and values. Through a combination of missionary efforts and the establishment of Church institutions, PAX integrated new territories into its spiritual and political fold. The Templars were at the forefront of PAX's expansion, ensuring compliance and quelling dissent among those who resisted the theocracy's rule.
Challenges and Controversies:
While PAX enjoyed fervent support from its followers, it also faced challenges and controversies. Some planets resisted the theocracy's governance and its influence over their way of life, leading to conflicts and resistance against PAX's expansion. In response, the Templars and the Church's Inquisitors were tasked with maintaining order, suppressing dissent, and ensuring the preservation of PAX's authority.

The Rapid Expansion and the Transition of Papal Leadership (2417-3032 CE):

As PAX embraced its newfound role as a theocracy, the years between 2417 and 2425 CE were marked by an extraordinary period of rapid expansion and consolidation of power. During this time, the Roman Catholic Church, under the leadership of Pope Julius VI, solidified its influence, shaping the destiny of the interstellar diaspora.
The Templars' Conquests:
The Templars, the elite soldiers of PAX, played a central role in the theocracy's rapid expansion. These highly skilled and devout warriors fearlessly led military campaigns into uncharted territories, confronting resistance from planets unwilling to embrace the rule of PAX. The Templars, unwavering in their loyalty to the Pope and the Church, brought the word of God to those who stood in defiance of the blessings of the theocracy.
Assimilation of New Territories:
PAX's expansion extended beyond military conquests. Diplomacy and the dissemination of the Church's teachings were essential to the assimilation of new territories. Priests and missionaries, supported by the Templars, worked tirelessly to propagate the message of faith and unity. Many planets willingly embraced PAX's governance, eager to become part of the spiritual communion fostered by the theocracy.
Establishment of Church Institutions:
As PAX expanded, the Church established new institutions on assimilated planets. Cathedrals, monasteries, and religious schools were erected as bastions of faith and centers of worship. These institutions served not only as spiritual sanctuaries but also as hubs for the dissemination of PAX's laws, culture, and values.
Challenges and Unity:
Despite its rapid expansion, PAX faced challenges and resistance from planets that clung steadfastly to their own beliefs and traditions. Nevertheless, the shared faith in the Roman Catholic Church fostered a profound sense of unity among PAX's citizens. The theocracy transcended mere political boundaries, becoming a spiritual home and sanctuary for the devoted.
Transition of Papal Leadership and the Crucible Program:
In 2420 CE, Pope Julius VI, the visionary founder of PAX, passed away, leaving a void in the leadership of the theocracy. The College of Cardinals convened to elect a new Pope, and in 2421 CE, Pope Pius XVI emerged as the chosen successor. With his ascension to the papacy, Pope Pius XVI brought a new vision for PAX, introducing the controversial Crucible program. This program offered the possibility of immortality to only the most devout followers, enhancing PAX's allure and further solidifying loyalty to the theocracy.
Continued Expansion:
Under Pope Pius XVI's leadership, PAX's expansion continued. The Templars, guided by the new Pope's teachings, upheld the theocracy's authority and dealt with challenges from those who resisted PAX's rule. With the unwavering dedication of the faithful and the fervent efforts of the Templars, PAX's influence spread throughout the galaxy.

Revelation of the Crucible's Price (3032-3059 CE):

The Dark Secret Unveiled:
In the year 3032 CE, after six centuries of PAX's dominion over the galaxy, a shocking revelation sent shockwaves throughout the interstellar community. The true nature of the Crucible program, initiated by Pope Pius XVI, was finally exposed. The Crucible, which had promised immortality to only the most devout followers of PAX, was revealed to come at a horrifying cost—the consumption of the very souls of innocent citizens. Those who underwent the transformation were left as withered husks, devoid of their spiritual essence, trapped in an eternal existence devoid of salvation.
The War of Souls:
The revelation of the Crucible's true price ignited a period of turmoil known as the War of Souls, spanning from 3032 to 3059 CE. Planets that had once been loyal to PAX now rose in rebellion, appalled by the sacrilege committed against their innocent citizens. The Templars, once revered as the defenders of faith, found themselves torn between their loyalty to the Pope and the crisis of conscience presented by the atrocities committed in the name of immortality. The galaxy was engulfed in conflict, with battles raging on countless worlds as the fires of rebellion spread.
Pope Pius XVI's Legacy:
Pope Pius XVI, the Pope who had introduced the Crucible program, was now at the center of controversy and upheaval. His once-great reputation as a spiritual leader was tarnished, and his legacy now stood on a precipice. As the chaos of the War of Souls raged, factions within PAX itself debated the future of the theocracy, with some seeking reform and redemption, and others clinging to the belief that the Crucible's price was justified for the sake of eternal loyalty to the Church.
The Fall of PAX:
The War of Souls brought PAX to its knees, shaking the foundations of the theocracy to its core. With internal divisions and external pressures mounting, PAX's grip on the galaxy weakened significantly. Many systems that had once been under PAX's control declared independence, seeking to forge their own destinies free from the oppressive yoke of the theocracy. By 3059 CE, the once-mighty PAX had fallen back to a corner of its Theocracy, its influence now limited to only a handful of systems that remained under its thumb.

Decline and Retreat (3062 CE onwards):

The Aftermath of the War of Souls:
The War of Souls, which had raged from 3032 to 3059 CE, left PAX and the galaxy in disarray. The revelation of the Crucible's price had shattered the theocracy's image and severely weakened its hold over the once-devout systems. In the aftermath of the conflict, PAX faced internal divisions and a crisis of faith among its followers. Many questioned the Church's authority and its leaders' actions, leading to a loss of trust and loyalty.
Retreat of PAX:
Faced with mounting challenges and internal dissent, PAX made the difficult decision to retreat from some of its once-loyal systems. This retreat left these planets without a proper government or governance structure, plunging them into a state of uncertainty and vulnerability. As a result, new governments began to emerge on these planets, each seeking to establish its own system of rule and governance.
Formation of the Federation of Free Planets:
In the wake of PAX's retreat, several of the newly formed governments on the affected planets saw an opportunity for cooperation and mutual support. These planets came together and established the Federation of Free Planets—a loose alliance of independent systems united by common values of freedom, democracy, and self-determination. The Federation sought to provide a collective defense against potential threats while respecting the individual sovereignty of its member planets.
Challenges for the Templars:
The Templars, devoted defenders of PAX's rule, faced their own challenges in the aftermath of the War of Souls. While their faith remained steadfast, there was a shortage of Templars, and they could no longer enforce PAX's authority over the vast number of systems as they once had. Many Templars found themselves spread thin, focusing their efforts on protecting the remaining loyal systems to the theocracy.
Rebuilding and Redefining:
As PAX retreated and the Federation of Free Planets formed, the galaxy entered a period of rebuilding and redefining itself. Former PAX loyalists grappled with the consequences of the theocracy's actions and sought to find a new sense of purpose and identity in the changing political landscape. Meanwhile, the Federation of Free Planets aimed to strike a balance between individual freedoms and the collective strength of the alliance.

Military

Knights' Templar

The Knights Templar are a highly esteemed and enigmatic organization within the PAX theocracy. Rooted in history and tradition, they were re established by Pope Julius VI after the rise of PAX in 2417 CE. As an elite group, they are shrouded in mystique, and their origins are steeped in religious significance.
Organization and Structure:
The Knights Templar operate as a disciplined and hierarchical order. They are led by a Grand Master, who is the highest-ranking authority within their ranks. The Grand Master reports directly to the Pope and serves as the Pope's personal champion and advisor on matters involving the Knights Templar.   Below the Grand Master, the order is divided into smaller divisions known as Templar Chapters. Each chapter is responsible for a designated region or mission. Templar Commanders lead these chapters, and they, in turn, oversee Templar Knights in smaller units.
Goals and Beliefs:
The primary goal of the Knights Templar is to defend and advance the interests of PAX and the Roman Catholic Church. They are zealous believers in the supremacy of their faith and see themselves as the instruments of God's will. As such, their actions are guided by their deep devotion to the Church and their unyielding faith in its doctrines.   While they are skilled warriors, their role goes beyond mere combat. The Knights Templar are also diplomats, missionaries, and emissaries. Their mission is to spread the teachings of the Church to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, converting non-believers and bringing wayward planets under the embrace of PAX's authority.
Their Job:
The Knights Templar's job is multifaceted and far-reaching:
  • Military Prowess: They serve as the elite military force of PAX, executing military campaigns to enforce the will of the Pope and the theocracy. They are sent to quell uprisings, suppress rebellions, and overcome resistance on planets that reject PAX's rule.
  • Missionary Work: Knights Templar act as missionaries, preaching the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and seeking to convert non-believers. They often accompany priests on their journeys, ensuring the word of God reaches even the most remote corners of the galaxy.
  • Diplomatic Envoys: In addition to military force, they are skilled diplomats, representing the Pope and PAX in negotiations with other worlds and factions. Their presence can both persuade and intimidate, depending on the situation.
  • Protectors of Holy Artifacts: The Knights Templar are entrusted with safeguarding sacred relics, artifacts, and religious sites, preserving their sanctity and protecting them from those who would misuse or desecrate them.
  • Inquisitorial Duties: While not the primary inquisitors of PAX, they may assist in the hunt for heretics or threats to the Church when necessary.
  • Special Missions: The Grand Master may assign special missions to the Knights Templar, such as retrieving lost texts of religious significance, uncovering ancient secrets, or dealing with particularly dangerous adversaries.

Inquisitors

Organization and Structure:
The Inquisitors form a secretive and clandestine branch within PAX. They operate independently of other divisions, reporting directly to the Pope and the College of Cardinals. The Grand Inquisitor heads this powerful and influential organization, overseeing all Inquisitors and their operations.   Within the Inquisitors, there are several ranks and divisions:
  • Grand Inquisitor: The highest-ranking Inquisitor, often handpicked by the Pope, is responsible for the overall operation and direction of the Inquisitorial Order.
  • High Inquisitors: These are the regional or sector-level leaders, overseeing Inquisitors in specific areas and reporting back to the Grand Inquisitor.
  • Inquisitors: The core members of the Inquisitorial Order, they are spread throughout PAX's territories and tasked with carrying out investigations, interrogations, and actions against perceived threats.

Goals and Methods:
The primary goal of the Inquisitors is to maintain and preserve the purity and orthodoxy of the Roman Catholic Church within the theocracy. They seek out heretics, dissidents, and individuals who may pose a danger to PAX's control and the unity of the faithful.   Their methods, though effective, are often ruthless and controversial:
  • Interrogation and Investigation: Inquisitors are granted broad powers to investigate individuals and organizations suspected of heresy. They employ various methods of interrogation, which may include psychological manipulation, physical coercion, and even torture to extract information.
  • Purging Heresy: When heresy is confirmed or when individuals resist recanting their beliefs, the Inquisitors may administer severe punishments, including public executions or exile. The aim is to make examples of those who challenge the Church's teachings to deter others from dissent.
  • Censorship and Control: Inquisitors actively monitor and censor information, ensuring that knowledge that contradicts Church doctrine remains suppressed. They also control access to certain sacred texts, ensuring they do not fall into the wrong hands.
  • Silent Accusations: Inquisitors can act on anonymous tips or accusations, enabling them to operate covertly without revealing the identities of informants.
  • Infiltration and Espionage: In extreme cases, Inquisitors may employ covert agents to infiltrate dissenting groups or gather intelligence on suspected threats to the Church.

Feared and Controversial:
The Inquisitors' methods and unchecked power have made them both feared and controversial within PAX and beyond. While they are seen as protectors of the faith by some, others view them as a tool of oppression and a force that stifles intellectual and spiritual exploration.

Crusader Legions

Organization and Structure:
The Crusader Legions operate as a highly organized and disciplined military force. They are divided into several legions, each named after a significant religious figure or event in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. Each legion is made up of several battalions, and each battalion consists of companies of soldiers.
Leadership:
The Crusader Legions have a strict hierarchy of command:
  • Legion Commanders: At the top of the hierarchy are the Legion Commanders. They hold the highest authority within their respective legions and report directly to the Pope and high-ranking officials of PAX.
  • Centurions: Centurions serve as commanders of individual legions. They are skilled tacticians and strategists, responsible for planning military campaigns and ensuring the successful execution of operations.
  • Decurions: Decurions are officers who lead smaller units within a legion, such as squads or platoons. They are responsible for executing orders, maintaining discipline, and overseeing the training and well-being of their soldiers.
  • Crusader Knights: These are the regular soldiers who make up the bulk of the Crusader Legions. They are highly trained in various forms of combat, advanced weaponry, and military tactics.

Training and Equipment:
Crusader Knights undergo rigorous and extensive training from a young age. Their training includes physical conditioning, martial combat, marksmanship, and specialized training in using advanced technology and weaponry, including powered armor, energy-based weapons, and advanced battle suits.   The Crusader Legions are equipped with state-of-the-art military technology developed through the integration of scientific advancements and the Crucible program's advanced knowledge. They have access to powerful energy weapons, advanced armor, and advanced communication and navigation systems for space and planetary operations.
Goals and Mission:
The primary mission of the Crusader Legions is to enforce the authority of the Pope and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the galaxy. Their goals include:
  • Expansion and Conquest: The Crusader Legions are at the forefront of expanding PAX's territories by bringing new planets and systems under the rule of the theocracy. They conquer and assimilate planets that resist PAX's authority.
  • Suppressing Rebellions: The Crusader Legions are often deployed to quell uprisings and rebellions against PAX's rule. Their show of force serves as a deterrent to those who would challenge the authority of the theocracy.
  • Protecting PAX's Interests: They are responsible for defending PAX's assets, territories, and strategic locations against external threats and potential invasions.
  • Securing Resources: The Crusader Legions may also be deployed to secure vital resources and strategic locations for the benefit of PAX.

Laws

As a theocracy governed by the Roman Catholic Church, the laws of PAX are deeply rooted in religious principles and the teachings of the Church. These laws are designed to uphold the authority of the Church, maintain the unity of the faithful, and promote the well-being of the theocracy. While the specifics of PAX's laws can vary depending on the time period and the interpretations of the Church, here are some general themes and examples of the laws within PAX:
  1. Canon Law: PAX follows the principles of canon law, which are the ecclesiastical laws and regulations of the Roman Catholic Church. These laws cover various aspects of religious practices, Church governance, and the spiritual well-being of the faithful.
  2. Religious Observances: Laws require regular attendance at Mass, participation in religious festivals, and adherence to the sacraments of the Church. Failure to attend religious services or follow religious obligations could be considered a violation of the law.
  3. Heresy and Apostasy: PAX's laws forbid any form of heresy or apostasy, meaning deviation from or rejection of Church teachings. Punishments for heresy can be severe, ranging from excommunication to more extreme measures such as public trials or even execution.
  4. Blasphemy and Sacrilege: Laws prohibit blasphemy, disrespectful speech against the Church or religious figures, as well as sacrilege, the desecration of sacred objects or religious sites.
  5. Moral Conduct: PAX enforces strict moral standards, including prohibitions on certain behaviors such as adultery, premarital sex, and practices deemed morally objectionable by the Church.
  6. Censorship and Control of Information: PAX maintains strict control over information, particularly that which contradicts Church doctrine or challenges the authority of the theocracy. Laws might restrict access to certain texts, artworks, or knowledge considered dangerous or heretical.
  7. Repression of Dissent: Laws discourage dissent against PAX's rule or the teachings of the Church. Public expression of dissenting opinions or questioning the authority of PAX may lead to harsh penalties.
  8. Interstellar Relations: Laws govern PAX's relations with other interstellar powers and factions. These laws ensure that PAX remains committed to its faith and does not engage in alliances or activities contrary to Church principles.
  9. Protection of Holy Artifacts: Laws safeguard sacred relics, artifacts, and religious sites from misuse or desecration, and any attempt to steal or defile these items is treated as a severe offense.
