The Southern Dominance

History

The Southern Dominance has always been a wild, lawless land, home to the most diverse population in all of Apora. Those who enjoy their freedom and are willing to take risks to keep it have always been drawn here. The people strongly contest any who seek to conquer the Southern Dominance.   Thonik Sekrahd encountered the most resistance here during the Era of Storms. Instead of subduing the people, he decimated them with the worst storms he could muster. What once was a profitable, fertile region became a barren wasteland. Its people fled, abandoning their homeland, and Sekrahd did his best to strike the very knowledge of their society from the minds of men.   However, he underestimated the gumption of the people he thought he destroyed. They may have fled their homeland, but they remembered, and when his rule toppled they returned to make the Southern Dominance their home once again.   While many other places in the world are suspicious of magic, the Southern Dominance holds no reserves against it. The philosophy of its people commends arcane users talents when they aid in survival. Many magic users live in hiding from persecution here.

Important City-States

The Southern Dominance has never been subjected to the rule of one person. Its people answer to no queen or chief and instead are organized into independent city-states. The land has recovered in the thousand years since Sekrahd's rule. It is plentiful in both resources and danger, and only the bravest live outside the protection of larger, more powerful empires. The risks are great, but also the rewards.

Wildehold

Wildhold is the largest city-state in the southern dominance. About 12,000 people live in and around the city which is ruled by Governor Vernon Nualis. It is the most well-defended and economically well off. Unlike most other city-states, Wildhold trades with the Seer Tribes. A wide variety of goods passes through its gates, including magical items. It's a bustling city made of people from all walks of life. The safest place to be in the Southern Dominance due to its sheer size and organization.

Stilcrest

The oldest surviving town of the Southern Dominance, the people of Stilcrest are tough, stubborn, and tied to the land. Many are farmers or fishers, as the city is close enough to the Barrthon Loch to support the trade. Mayor Ardeim Nikhal oversees about 4,500 residents. The town guard is formidable, seeing as it must often protect the town from the dangers of the wilds. Because of the direction of the winds, the town usually smells like the nearby swamp.

Direpoint

Generally a distasteful place to live, the people of Direpoint are ornery and unpleasant. Direpoint lives up to its name, since its a place for people with no other place to go and known throughout the Dominance as a dead end place. You settle in Direpoint, you die in Direpoint. Unwelcoming to strangers, most people tend to avoid this town of 700. A judge is appointed by majority vote to settle disputes in the town, though they usually don't last long in the position. Because of this, Direpoint is a common place for criminals to lay low.

Lostmore

Lostmore is a dying town near the Basanite Canyons. Barely 400 people live there. Most of its commerce comes from travelers passing through on their way north. Farming is difficult due to the ever-encroaching desert that is the last remains of Thornik Sekrahd's influence over the Southern Dominance.
