Captain of the Guard, Theydim

We are all Thydian, and we must be Thydian first.
— High King Magnus the Red-Eyed
While City Guards are primarily a militia and law enforcement, they have a place within their Arling's military. With the signing of the thydian unification treaty, the city guard became part of Theydim's military with a dedication to their assigned location.   Someone has to organize the guards, and so they answer to their local people and to their Captain. While the treaty changed the finer details , the duties have gone with ittle to no change.

Duties of the Rank

As most laws are enforced by societal pressure, the Captain of the Guard prepares for the "normal" sources of local disturbances their guards handle - brawls, keeping the peace between feuding neighbors and similar.   The Captain reports to whoever is in charge of the populated region about the current situations or concerns with the future.   Among the guards, the Captain arranges the shifts and may assign specific investigations to a guard as a case may require.

Large Cities

Depending on the size of the city, there may be District Sergeants who answer to Shift Captains as well as the Captain of the Guard. These divisions break down the task of protecting a city of thousands into several manageable tasks to be delegated or resolved without losing as much of the greater whole.

Smaller Towns and Cities

While large cities need Shift Captains, the smaller locations do not and may only have a literal handful of people.

Social Status

In society, the Captain of the Guard is close to political leaders, though views shift on the individual. A Captain associated with an uncaring town council or Lord will look negligent, while a Captain who is strict or excessive can make the local leaders appear similar.

Appointment

Captains are generally from the region they are assigned to, though the Treaty has forced several to relocate in order to reduce the risk of corruption or incompetence among the ranks.   Unfortunately, this has resulted in suspicion within guards.

Oathsworn

Before the Unification Treaty, guards would swear, to their local political power, an oath to defend the people of their settlement, an oath resworn as a guard earned the duties of their promoted rank.   Currently, there is an oath to the High King. As a result, the Civil War has caused confusion while some places have reverted back to the earlier form of their oath.

Declination

With the signing ofthe treaty, several would-be Captains have turned down promotion opportunities to protest the relocation of themselves or others. Arlings varied in response based on their Arles, and some guards were tasked with guarding a cell occupied by one or several of their own.

Retirement

Most retire from age or a lack of the physical ability to complete their duties.
