Reanimation

Overview

Reanimation is a necromantic sub magic used to create undead constructs, of note is its differences to resurrection, a similar necromantic sub magic

Resurrection v. Reanimation

Ok look, for the last time, one makes zombies, the other brings people back to life... Which? Oh nobody knows.
— Sam Mourte
A tired elamentary teacher
Resurrection is the practice of calling forth newly dispersed life force to bring someone back to life, whereas reanimation replaces the life force with magic. A person who is reanimated will have none of their memories and will be subject to the reanimators will, a resurrected person would have all of their memories and similar goals to when they died (gratitude helps someone not kill you).   However, given these differences an interesting phenomenon can be observed, when these two magics are combined it often allows someone to be saved from a further death (usually up to three days, but Healing magic has been known to extend this limit.

A brief overview on the crypt keepers

The crypt keepers are a race of fully autonomous sentient undead that ignore most of the limitations of reanimated and ressurected constructs due to the mixing of two to three necromantic sub magics. They are created when someone who is too far dead to save has the missing life force replaced by magic, this isn't however without a price.
Known effects
  • Injuries are retained - this can be avoided if a healer is involved
  • Personality changes- they usually become moodier, more nocturnal and infatuated with creepy things. These changes continue to grow.
  • Memory loss - their most recent memories before their the death stretching further depending on how long it was before the became crypt keepers
  • And more (article coming)

Use

Basic use

Concentrate and reach out with you mind, grip a corpse and pull it up from the ground.
— Theodore Tod
A child's guide to basic reanimation 1374

Reanimation and summoning

Like most necromantic magics it's used through concentration. It's slight variance is that it works more like a metal detector. When a reanimator wants to find a corpse to reanimate they reach out their hand and "look" for a corpse. When the feel something the reanimator will make a gesture, such as closing an open fist, summoning and reanimating the corpse.

Use of necromantic creatures

Once a necromancer has summoned their new minion they use their mind and usually some slight gestures to command them. They can summon as many as they want but a talented necromancer can only struggle to control twenty at a time.

Psychic Battles

After intense study we still have no idea how these things work, we see patterns they ███████ BREAK THEM!
— Prof. (now dean) Surma
Their thesis on psychic battles 1382
A psychic battle occurs when two wizards attempt to gain control of the same (or group of) necrotic creature resulting in a mental battle for control. Mentally, a game or competition will manifest, usually something that one of the player knows how to play, due to the molding of mental force they will usually both know the rules for the duration of the game. Another notable, but also not infallible, pattern is different win states withing the game, for example, chess ending when the first piece is taken and not at checkmate.

Limitations

Limitations are different things that keep a magic powerful but not too powerful, in the world of convergence their classified into three different categories based on how they can be overcome, they can't, they can be overcome with assistance from other magics, or they can be overcome with skill talent or training.

Permanant limitations

A limitation of a magic is something that prevents it from being world ending and keeps the balance of convergence so no, there are some limits that should not be overcome.
— Robert Trépas
Philosopher and respected magioligist.
    *qualifies for another category
  • The corpse cap- Reanimators can only control up to twenty corpses*
  • Range limit- Reanimators can only reanimate corpses within one square mile
  • Limited intelligence- the corpse will only be able to perform physically possible actions that the wielder knows how to do*

Surpassable with aid from other magic

Yes I disagree with Mr. *Treepaz* (mangled pronunciation of Trépas) if we can work together to make our lives easier, why not!
— Prof. Sal Aleben
Entrepeneur and expert in magic mixing
  • Damaged corpses - corpses frequently have decayed by the time they are reanimated, and as a result are weaker than they were in life -surrpassable using healing magic
  • Lack of free will - corpses can only do exactly what they are told - very rarley surpassable with ressurection magic
  • Limited intelligence- the corpse will only be able to perform physically possible actions that the wielder knows how to do - very rarely surpassable with ressurection magic
  • Surpassable limitations

Limitations? I don... OH! Yeah we should probably get rid of those.
    — Richard Mor
    Explorer and accredited necromancer.
  • Corpse limit - the average reanimator can usually only control 4 corpses at a time
