Confluence and The Gods

The practice of organised religion is one of the few areas where Leonidas Sharrow has imposed specific restrictions.   The general principle on which Sharrow's Hold is organised and policed is that everyone is expected to behave in a civilised manner in town, and most things are permitted provided they don't cause undue harm.   But in the case of religion, both temples and active proselytization are outright banned. People are allowed to believe what they want to believe, and can worship privately in any way they want (although human sacrifice is still treated as murder). Clerics can move around the settlement freely, but their garb should not be so gaudy that it could be interpreted as an appeal for converts.   Worship is permitted in private houses, and indeed a few religions have established houses as a place of worship. Although they may function as temples, any outward signage or display or religious symbolism is strictly banned.   The penalties for breaching these restrictions very much depend on the severity of the infraction and the mood of the constable (or, if the perpetrator is unlucky, the Vigilant Investigator) involved. In the most minor cases, a warning and a token fine of a couple of gold pieces are the norm. But for serious or repeat cases, punishments can include significant fines, total expropriation, exile, or even execution.   The last priest attempting to publicly establish a temple was the self-styled Raderic, Archbishop on Confluence of the Temple of Pelor. He both attempted to build a gaudy temple and actively preached in public daily to try to gain adherents. For this, and his refusal to heed repeated warnings to stop, he was publicly (and slowly) executed in Tower Gate Square. The method of execution was to be repeatedly but briefly dipped up to his neck in a gelatinous cube until he was fully dissolved.
