The Fracture Accord
Document Properties:
Medium: Etched into a layered memore-shale tablet.
Access: Only Seedvoices and above may read it in full. Fragments are sung to initiates during the Trial of the Hollow Tongue.
Language: Written in Talaséan , the now-lost root language from which many Láenthelin idioms descend.
Purpose
To formalize the Order’s origin, mission, and obligations to the land, the Lake, and the tone of existence following the first successful fracture of the Crystal Lake.
It is equal parts myth, oath, and law.
Document Structure
Clauses
The Fracture Accord is divided into Three Harmonies. Selected highlights from the Three Harmonies:
On Resonant Existence:
The world is a chord; each life a note. Silence is not absence but potential.
On Ethical Fracture:
Let no hand shatter what it cannot name. The ignorant fracture invites dissonance.
On Seclusion and Memory:
The isle shall not open unless the tone of the world wavers. Until then, let all echo inward.
On Instruction and Succession:
Let the Songbearers teach only when the learner has unlearned all other chords.
On the Crystal Lake:
That which is beneath the Lake is not ours. Only the surface song may be shared.
FIRST HARMONY: The Tone-Bound World
- The world is a resonant structure composed of tone-bearing materials.
- Every object, lifeform, and action produces fractal harmonics that shape existence.
- Crystal is not inert, but dormant language.
- Fracture reveals — it does not destroy.
This section lays the cosmological framework for the Order’s practices.
SECOND HARMONY: The Pact of Shard and Root
- This harmony codifies the ethical framework of crystal harvesting.
- No crystal may be fractured without knowing its tone-name.
- Fracturing must be ritualistic, not utilitarian.
- The Glassroot Grove is declared sacred ground — no blades may be raised there.
This section binds the Order to the sacred ecology of Sradag Isle
THIRD HARMONY: The Order’s Vow
- Members of the Order swear to:
- Guard the knowledge of fracture.
- Teach only through resonance trials.
- Sing the Lake's Name once per Spiral to maintain the world’s balance.
- Breach of tone-vow results in shattering — either literal or symbolic.
- Outsiders may not be taught the Name of the Lake.
This final section is the core oath — it grants legitimacy and continuity to the Order’s existence.
Caveats
There are interpretive limits due to The Accord being written in Talaséan. Some clauses are rhythm-bound and lose meaning outside of their sung form. The Accord is also a tone-reactive artifact; improper reading, especially by outsiders or untrained readers, has caused resonant fractures, hallucinations, or in some cases, loss of voice. Also, the final clause, "Let no Accord be rewritten, lest we shatter the root," has prevented amendments, despite major societal changes. Finally, the Order maintains that only true-blooded Láenthelin of shard-bound ancestry may interpret The Accord fully. This created racial and ancestral tensions.
References
Direct textual references are rare, due to the sacred and protected nature of the Accord. However, The Resonant Mandate (a modern ideological expansion) refers to it 13 times by phrase or tone-glyph. Aislish scholar Korm Datherel claimed to have seen an unauthorized scroll version in On the Harmonics of the Exiles (banned in Aisling and Sradag). And The Cracked Accord (an apocryphal, corrupted version) allegedly circulates among the Dissident Harvesters, considered blasphemous and dangerous.
Publication Status
The Original Copy is stored within the Chamber of the Low Pulse, deep beneath the Crystal Lake. Never removed.
- Authorized Replicas:
Only 5 are known. Each is: - Etched into a whisperstone slab.
- Guarded by high-ranking Seedvoices.
- Kept in major ceremonial sites (e.g., Tinehall, Orsál Root, Mirrorcliff Circle).
For public Availability, fragments are sung, not read, during key rituals (such as the Trial of the Hollow Tongue, the Resonant Vigil, and the Lake's Naming).
- Banned Forms:
Attempts to translate the Accord into outsider languages or digitize its tonal glyphs are strictly forbidden.
Legal status
This is considered the highest law on Sradag Isle — more binding than any later document. Every new Spiral of leadership must reaffirm the Fracture Accord aloud in the resonance chamber or forfeit the legitimacy of their title. The Order's autonomy is derived from the Accord — to oppose it is to "violate the tone of the land."
Historical Details
Legacy
All subsequent laws, rituals, and documents (including The Resonant Mandate ) refer back to the Fracture Accord as their spiritual and juridical source. Some offshoot sects interpret the Accord literally, believing that tone can undo time, and that the first fracture was also the first moment. A heretical copy, known as the Cracked Accord, supposedly circulates among dissident shard-harvesters who believe tone can be commodified.
