Historical Basis
It is believed that long ago, those currently in inhabiting the swamp descended from an immortal people who lost this trait through some sin.
Those living along the fire line harbour a religious desire to return to that state. Perceiving and idealizing the past as a forever paradise. And so, many myths often personify death as a figure who can be confronted, tricked or imprisoned. Thus regaining this power. However, it inevitably returns.

All throughout the land, stories abound of epic heros or historical figures successfully routing death as a metaphysical, or even literal, condition for everyone. And one of two consequences:
