Construction beginning/end

After a gruelling series of battles in which numerous towns and cities were lain to waste, The Brazen Empire finally rallies and begins to push back against The Harlequin's host. Leaderless and disarray, the armies of madness crumble before the disciplined assault, though not before inflicting staggering casualties upon the Legions.   A desperate defense around the rift then ensued, the forces constantly harried as, without rhyme nor reason, the Rift would erupt with new forces of lunatic malice. The Emperor-Elect, knowing that such a battle could not be maintained, nor an invasion into the rift, ordered the construction of vast wall around the wound.   For over a year the Imperial Army fought tirelessly as construction continued, until finally it was built. Strangely, as soon as the last brick was lain, the assaults stopped in their entirety, leaving The Brazen Empire confused and terrified. What damage had been done had been without reason or sense; what would come when finally the banners were raised, and The Harlequin marched to war?
