Encarmine Roe
Ser Encarmine Roe (a.k.a. The Sovereign of Thorn, The Ashen Face, The Lady in Raven)
"I will not bend nor break before any who seek my throne, for I am the Sovereign of Thorns. Bitter I may be, and barren of love or kind word, but the forest will outlast even gods and kings, and it will most certainly outlast you."
Divine Domains
The spirit of Encarmine Roe has always professed independence, and even as a mortal they were difficult and reluctant to serve without payment or personal reason. A guardian of the forest's interests, she was an ally whose loyalty never betrayed the heart of their woodland realm, no matter the consequence or retribution such a steadfast attitude would bring. Their domain then, is the rule of the forest and the wild lands, bowing before none and protecting against those who think themselves superior.
Such an attitude is not wholly reactionary however, for where the forests will guard within, Roe will eagerly guard without, pre-emptively striking those who threaten the integrity of their home. Such was the fate of The Lady's Rebellion and Roe's eventual imprisonment for centuries, a bold attack against a former friend in sight of the arrogance they now professed. This then is Encarmine Roe, never the guardian of the wild, but its violent nature unleashed, red in tooth and claw.
Artifacts
A warrior before a ruler, a knight before their crown; Encarmine Roe deals little with the arcane arts. Still, their legend is potent and that of their tools is great as well, and few would dare match blades against their armoury or skill in battle.
- Rez'tentewr: A fearsome lance of red venom, The Rose of Tantur was a gift from a far-off land. The legend states that they fought against a great evil of death and corruption who threatened an ancient city, slaying the beast in a fearsome duel atop sand and smoke. The leaders of the city, so delighted they had been saved, gifted Roe this lance moulded from the rare flowers sported above the graves of the royal family, who had been slain by the nightmare. Mere folly it seemed, for the story continues that their lives were taken next; attempting to rebuild their city at the cost of the natural world.
- The Banner of Rout: Unfurled only when Encarmine Roe marches to war, The Banner of Rout is a disfigured tapestry comprised of the ruined flag that once marked their alliegance to The Lady. Possessed of a chimaeric design of patchwork sygils, each one represents an oath broken, a promise spurned. When it soars however, such darkness is made manifest as the carrion cry answers the call of The Ashen Face of The Morrigan.
- Llafn y Pennaeth: Once the great weapon of Ser Bercilak; The Headsman, as it is more commonly known, was taken by Encarmine Roe when first The Knights of Rout battled against The Knights Thirteen. Recognising a kindred spirit in the great warrior, Roe allowed Bercilak to survive, claiming instead his executioner's blade for her own. Now she wields it in defence of the forest, claiming those who woul dare trespass against it.
Holy Books & Codes
As one of the many deities comprising The Green Pact, Encarmine Roe does not possess any holy texts as such, for like many faiths in Amilyn, it does not seek to proselytize or convert. That said, those who would cleave to her teachings study intently the story of her life. Y Finari is one of the many chapters that comprise The Book of Arduin, and it is a lengthy poem detailing the original rise of Encarmine Roe amidst the Fae, and her eventual defeat as she turned upon The Lady.
With her return, there has been some debate over whether the poem should be continued, but Roe has so far resisted such requests. Those stories are of a different time and a different place, and should rest as they are. With the world changing so, it is time for new tales and new legends, not repetition of what has already come.
Divine Symbols & Sigils
As leader of The Knights of Rout and Sitting Face of The Morrigan, Encarmine Roe is frequently represented by the iconography of both organisations; a broken sword point groundwards for the first, and a three-headed raven for the second. Those rare few in service however, who respect only her and not her position within the hierarchy, will wear upon their brow a crown of thorns, or emblazon such imagery upon their clothing or armour.
A select few bear another image however, one forbidden by The Sovereign of Thorns, and harshly punished should it be discovered. A black band representing a blindfold with an eye on the right weeping blood. What legend this calls upon, what story it tells, is long forgotten except by those who wear it and she who will not stand for it. Unsurprisingly, those who do choose to scar themselves such are loathe to mention its origin to those not already aware, and Roe takes poorly to any who even question its existence.
Tenets of Faith
Less a god and more a guardian spirit, Encarmine Roe possesses few followers, and of these little is expected of them bar the protection of the forest. Rare are the mortals willing to bend the knee to such a being, and rarer still are those that the Sovereign of Thorn accepts.
- The Oath of Oak: Treat with the forest as you would treat with the kine; for you are a prince of the woodland realms. Speak with caution and wise counsel, for you are their sovereign as much as any being of flesh and blood.
- The Oath of Ash: Endure against the world and do not break. You are as the forest, resolute and eternal; your death granted only so greater things may grow.
- The Oath of Thorn: We are the blade of the green wyld, their wrath unleashed as tooth and claw. Do not hesitate to strike against those who would seek to strike first. No weapon is denied you, nor tactic too foul.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
Forever a servant of the forest, and a guardian of its natural boundaries, Encarmine Roe is nonetheless a being of independance and personal drive. Though she may seek to protect, her service comes at the cost of freedom, and though the woodlands may appreciate her aid, they do not always agree with the path she takes alone. Such was the case when she raised her flag in rebellion against The Lady, for the forest was unwilling to be so divided as the heavens warred amongst themselves.
