Sigils
Carved into stone, ceramic, metal, wood, and other materials, sigils are important to the magic that helps power Clair.
In the warring between technology and magic in Clair, none can deny the use and power of sigils in bringing the two disciplines together.
The magic of sigils, by its very nature, takes materials and gives them power, making them useful in many ways. Sailors use sigils on their airships to maintain steady power through storms and the like when the technological power systems have failed. Inventors use sigils in their work with new technologies, using the specific types of sigils for each stage of their work to great effect. The governors, lawyers, bankers, and merchants use sigils in making binding contracts. These are only a handful of examples of sigil use in everyday practice.
The use of sigils in magical practice hails from ancient times before the breaking of Brangorn in the Calamity of Caves. Ancient sigils still create powerful barriers to and from places, convey messages to travelers, and ward off evil attacks.
Wizards, witches, liches, alchemists and all magic users are versed in at least basic sigil magic. Both the creating of sigils and the usage of sigils is taught in magic schools across Clair. This creates a backbone for the magical community in Clair, as technological advancements continue to threaten other schools of magic.
The use of sigils by royalty and other government entities is a long and storied tradition.
Among the many alphabets of sigils, there are several that are reserved only for royal and government seals. Whole dictionaries are dedicated to the topic, and are highly vetted, and very difficult to get a hold of. The exclusivity of such sigils makes a thriving black market for fakes and the few true ones that can be found out in the "wild".

Gathering Stones
Used as the "gates" or "doors" of places within and without, gathering stones are large rocks with magical sigils carved into their surface.
All of Clair still uses this magic, to the chagrin of those who would see magic eradicated completely. Entire regions can be defined by the gathering stones that dot the landscape. Inside the city, gathering stones serve as a safety barrier between sky and land.
Legends
Legends of gathering stones say that they can act as doorways between this world and others. Whether that world is another planet, another sky city, or the world of the dead it does not matter, there is a legend that covers all possibilities.
