Toney Tone
Toney Tone, the one-legged beggar, has a knack for finding newspapers. He scours the streets near the pyramid portal, where people from all over the world come and go, and beg for tokens, franks, dollars or sand. He doesn’t care much for the news, but he loves the entertainment section. He devours the stories of celebrities, scandals, and gossip, imagining himself in their glamorous lives. He often shares his paper with someone who shows him kindness, hoping to brighten their day as well.
Sometimes, he sneaks into the portal and zaps himself to the entertainment castle in the heart of the city. It is a dazzling place, full of lights, music, and laughter. But it is also a dangerous place for a beggar like him. The human security guards often chase him down if he cannot pay the castle entrance fee. He learned to bribe them with franks, but it doesn’t always work. Sometimes he meets a friendly guard who lets him in, but the unfriendly guards amuse themselves by shoving Toney Tone back into the portal.
The master traveler knew Toney Tone well. He often gave him a coin or a smile, and in return, he got a newspaper. He found it useful to read the entertainment section, as it contained clues and hints for his quests. He also felt a bond with the beggar, who reminded him of the importance of kindness. He believed that kindness strengthened his soul, and a strong soul made his spells more powerful.
Toney Tone didn’t trust many people, but he trusted the master traveler. He told him his story, how he lost his leg, how he became a beggar, how he dreamed of seeing the world. The master traveler listened with compassion and respect. He knew that the beggar had a lot of wisdom and insight, and that having him as a friend was a valuable asset. He knew that the less fortunate had their own ways of knowing things, and that listening to them could make a difference.
