The Calamity

The Calamity, The Great Calamity, The Darkflame Calamity, the Great Dying, all names given to an event that spanned an unknown amount of time, and if the record is true, nearly wiped out all life. Little is known how it started and even less information survived from the time before it. Stories are told of blade-blizzards, blackened oceans, and great abominations of nature. It was a time of great wickedness and strife yet also a time of eduring hope. Some record of nomadic civilizations have been unearthed, showcasing the lengths mortals were able to endure. From this time little does remain, save for its namesake, the darkflame: an abyssal spark which greedily consumes all light around it and burns the very essense of life as fuel. The Darkflame causes many strange and preternatural phenomena and yet little is known of its purpose or nature. Many fear the darkflame for the time it represents but some revere it as something akin to divinity itself.
