Telling the Story
CotM is told in a similar fashion to playwriting, taking place in many small parts over time to build into one whole piece. These pieces are broken into scenes and acts. A Scene is the accumulated events within a week or less that the players experience. An Act is a set of scenes that come together to tell the story over the course of a month or less.
Beginning an act starts with a prompt created by the gamemaster. This prompt is usually the opening to a scene based on the current setting such as a new day or entering a new area. Players are able to respond to the scene’s prompt with actions and conversation as their character while the gamemaster in tern replies to the players in the form of either non-player characters or the world itself.
Continuing the scene is dependent on both the players and gamemaster being able to respond to each other through the input of quality information and roleplay. The quality of roleplay is also shown through timely responses by both parties, though the instant reply of each person is not always going to be possible, it is encouraged to at least check the game every day or turn on notifications in case conversation slows.
The end of a specific scene is presented by the gamemaster for the purpose of ending a certain portion of the act.
Conversation in scenes are welcomed and can be freely done without taking any action, but please remember to have common sense in situations whether you would have enough time to formulate and convey larger lengths of conversation.
