Mana Sickness

Every mage in Hysal was taught from a young age that Wild Mana was their single best source of nourishement and energy. Better than normal food, and even better than an Alchemist's mana potions. However, they were also taught to not consume more than they need, as doing so can lead to a rather unpleasant condition known as Mana Sickness.

Causes

The cause of Mana Sickness is two fold. The most important one is the rapid and excessif absorption of Wild Mana. However, for a well trained mage with a median mana absorption capacity, this wouldn't be too big of a problem. Thats when the strength of a Mage's mana core comes into play. The smaller and weaker a mage's core is, the easiest it will be for them to overwelm it and give themselves mana sickness.

Symptoms

Mana sickness comes in two forms: Common and severe. Each form shares the same base set of syptoms, but the severe form the of the condition adds on extra symptoms that are potentialy dangerous not only for the afflicted mage, but also for the people around them.

Common Sickness symptoms:

  • Disconfort in the upper-middle chest (Where the core is)
  • Headache
  • Warm flash
  • Some difficulty breathing

Severe sickness symptoms:

  • Sharp pain in the upper chest
  • Migrane
  • Diziness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting
  • Involontary magic
These symptoms will stay as long as the mage's mana core is overfilled. Once the mage uses up the excess mana, the pain and other symptoms will gradualy subside, in a time frame of about a few hours to half a day.

Treatment

When a mage gets mana sickness, there is only one possible treatement, and that is to use up the surplus mana as quickly as possible. This is obviously done by doing magic, and it is important that when a mage is afflicted with Mana sickness, that people around them give them enough space to not be affected by the usualy less-than-controled magic going around.

Prevention

Training one's magic abilities from a young age is the single most important way to prevent such a condition from ever manifesting, or at the very least, diminish its symptoms. Training will not only indicate to a mage their limit when it comes to mana absorbtion, but it will also help them strenghten their cores, allowing them to absorb more in the future, which reduces the risk of Mana sickness.
