Svartvord

Defences

Svartvord’s defences are designed to control access, isolate internal danger, and withstand breach events. They are not intended to repel armies or contain large, place-bound threats such as the undead of Ómannslendr. The undead of Ómannslendr are bound to the land itself and cannot function beyond it. As such, Svartvord is not defended against invasion from Ómannslendr. The settlement assumes that those threats remain contained by geography and condition, not walls.
The outer boundary of Svartvord consists of a thick, low stone enclosure wall, built for strength and durability rather than height. The wall is plain, difficult to climb, and reinforced on the interior with buttressing and maintenance walkways. Its purpose is to deny casual entry and channel all approach toward controlled access points. Access is limited to a small number of reinforced gates. Each gate is narrow and inward-angled, fitted with multiple layers of timber and iron doors backed by stone barriers. Entry passages are confined and monitored, allowing inspection and control of all movement. Gates are normally closed and opened only under direct supervision.
Within the settlement, internal walls and sealed corridors divide Svartvord into separate districts. Movement between areas requires authorisation, and some passages are permanently sealed. This segmentation allows compromised sections to be isolated without evacuating the entire settlement. The ground surrounding key sections of the enclosure is shaped with trenches and cuttings to slow approach and deny cover. These are dry obstacles intended to break movement and funnel entrants toward the gates. Observation is maintained through low watch posts built into walls and rises in the surrounding terrain. These posts provide constant oversight of approaches and internal yards, prioritising detection over display.
The heaviest defences are found within the Vault areas, where dangerous objects and sealed remnants are held. These spaces use stone-sealed chambers, iron-bound doors, and narrow access points. Some structures are designed to collapse inward if breached, ensuring that contained material remains buried even if the area is lost.

Districts

Svartvord is not a civic settlement and is not organised into neighbourhoods in the conventional sense. Its internal divisions reflect function, restriction, and authority, rather than residence or trade.
Only a small portion of Svartvord is accessible to outsiders, and most areas are restricted by oath or rank.

Assets

Svartvord maintains a limited but critical set of assets necessary for the operation, training, and continuity of the Halgvord. These assets are institutional rather than economic and are not intended to support prolonged independent deployment. Svartvord holds doctrinal archives containing records of past incidents, containment precedents, failure cases, classifications of threats, and rulings issued by previous High Doom-Wardens. These archives are restricted and form the basis of Halgvord training and decision-making.
Inside of the site they maintain a secure storage vault for their ritual equipment, iron restraints, sealing materials, binding vessels, and other specialised tools not commonly available in local settlement. This vault is restricted, not even a Skjoldkapten is allowed in nor is the Heaðrífa of the Hæðstjórnar. The Halgvord believe that no one, some past Heaðrífa have tried to force laws through the Hæðþing to allow them into the vaults and such of Svartvord however both the Halgvord and Skjoldhirð protested the move, which caused every Heaðrífa to back down who tried to force these laws. These reserves are intended for emergency response or situations where local provisioning is unavailable or compromised. Svartvord also houses sealed repositories for dangerous relics, tainted objects, and bound remnants that cannot be safely destroyed in the field. These are contained under layered wards and are periodically inspected or re-sealed as required.
There is a dedicated area for training new members into the Halgvord and controlled test areas are maintained for drill, instruction, and induction rites. These spaces allow new members to be trained without exposing civilian populations or sacred sites to risk.
Medical and recovery facilities are maintained for injured or withdrawn Doom-Wardens, including space for long-term convalescence and ritual stabilisation. These facilities are functional rather than extensive and are not open to non-members.
