Family names

Family Names and By-Names in Bryttan
Bryttan society does not make widespread use of fixed, hereditary family names. Instead, individuals are identified through a flexible system of by-names, which describe lineage, role, origin, or reputation. These by-names may change over the course of a person’s life and are not automatically passed to their children. A Bryttan individual is therefore most often known by a given name alone in everyday use, with additional identifiers added only when needed for clarity, formality, or legal record.
Patronymics
Patronymics identify a person through their parentage, most commonly by referencing the father. These are used primarily in legal proceedings, oaths, formal announcements, and assembly records. Patronymics apply only to one generation and do not function as hereditary family names. A person’s children will not inherit the same patronymic.
Example:
Hárlaug, Arn’s son
Rúnhild, Arn’s daughter
Role and Office By-Names
Individuals who hold a recognised office, duty, or communal function may be identified by a role-based by-name. These by-names are earned through service and are not permanent. When the office ends, the by-name typically falls out of use. Role by-names are common in official contexts and may replace patronymics when a role becomes widely associated with an individual.
Example:
Hárlaug Fen-Ward
Eadburh Oath-Keeper
Locative By-Names
Locative by-names describe a person’s place of origin, residence, or significant association. These may reference settlements, landscapes, or regions and can change if a person relocates or becomes strongly associated with a new place. Locative by-names are not symbols of landownership or origin but rather if someone is connected to that area by birth or relocating.
Example:
Cenwald of the North Marsh
Rúndis at Mereford

Descriptive and Reputation By-Names
Some by-names arise from notable physical traits, habits, skills, or reputations, these names are informal and are generally socially assigned rather than having any legal recognition. While they may be widely used in speech, they rarely appear in formal records due to the legal status not been recognised as proper names.
Such by-names can be honorific, neutral, or insulting, depending on their origin and context.

Clan and House Names
A small number of powerful or ancient lineages use clan or house names derived from legendary ancestors, sacred places, or long-established kin-groups. These names are typically reserved for elites and prominent families and are not used by the majority of the population. Even in these cases, clan or house names function more as marks of prestige.
Example:
Hárlaug of House Arn
