Chaos Re/Coil: An Explanation of Luma and Umbra
The most consequential force in the islands of Izan is the Chaos Re/Coil effect.
The Chaos Re/Coil effect has two parts:
Luma, the force of pure energy, matter, light, movement, breath;
...and Umbra, the force of pure potential, the void, stillness, spirit.
It is described by an old Izin proverb: “Water cannot be gathered without a pot, and the prairie must burn for the wildflowers to grow.” In an basic sense, it is just like breathing. It is the tendency for breath, matter, energy to rush, sometimes violently, toward empty space.
Luma focused arts and techniques gather energy from the sun, earth, or other living things. This can be destructive to those living things, depending on the user and their tradition.
This energy is harnessed differently in many traditions, such as:
Umbra, in contrast, is a mystic substrate that feeds the creative force of Luma. One can use their own internal umbra, called "Ego" which can result in a Chaos Re/Coil effect or "Kickback" that consumes the user and either destroys them or transforms them in some way, sometimes good, sometimes bad. A master of this technique knows how to "hold the gate open," so to speak, allowing the influx of source umbra rather than their Ego.
In practice, this is used in many traditions, such as:
The connection between ritual and Luma/Umbra control is undeniable, and the chaotic nature of their interactions can cause a wide variety of unknown
